Stripping and Recoating the Compound Parabolic Cone Concentrators A Key Optical Component for the NIST SPHERE Statement of Work
RFQ #SB1341-15-RQ-0692
A. BACKGROUND
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) houses a world-class resource for developing and promoting the use of science-based tools – measurements, data, models, protocols, and reference standards – to enhance both the global competitiveness of U.S. industry through innovations in building materials and construction technology; and the safety, security, and sustainability of the nation’s buildings and physical infrastructure.
The NIST SPHERE is a unique weathering device for accelerated exposure of samples to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, temperature and humidity. One of the key optical devices for the SPHERE are the custom Compound Parabolic Cone Concentrators (CPC). The CPC collects and collimates the diffuse light from the SPHERE and transfers it to the sample site. Over time, the UV reflective coating on the CPC degrades and needs recoating. Without recoating, the UV intensity will decrease to a point where the SPHERE becomes unusable.
B. PURPOSE
To maintain the operation of the 2m SPHERE, the coating on (24) Compound Parabolic Cone Concentrators shall be stripped and recoated with vacuum deposited Al/MgF2.
C. MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
The contractor shall remove the aluminum and magnesium fluoride coatings from the compound parabolic cone concentrators (CPC) and refurbish the cone surface if necessary. Refurbishing may include but is not limited to, buffing out an imperfections from the CPC and/or adding additional Rhodium coating. The CPCs shall then be recoated with aluminum and magnesium fluoride using vacuum deposition and return shipped to NIST.
D. INSPECTION/ACCEPTANCE
