About this file
This is a Statement of Work for the assessment of residual stress in ultrasonically welded single lap shear coupons. The objective is to evaluate the effect of weld stack crystallinity on the strength of ultrasonically welded thermoplastic composites. NASA will provide all materials, including T1100/LM-PAEK and IM7/PEKK adherends and films (both semi-crystalline and amorphous) for process development and production welding. The vendor must conduct weekly remote review meetings with NASA, provide monthly reports summarizing weld process results, and perform a process development study with up to 12 ultrasonic welds to establish appropriate welding parameters, recording weld energy, pressure, cycle time, and observed material behavior.
The vendor shall perform and deliver 36 initial welds to NASA or directly to the CHESS facility at Cornell University, providing documentation and observations from the welding process. Subsequently, the vendor shall perform up to 60 additional welds for delivery to NASA, with full documentation of observations. All welded coupons shall be shipped to NASA Glenn Research Center, 21000 Brookpark Road, Building 49, Room 147, Cleveland, Ohio 44135, unless an alternative address is agreed upon. The point of contact for this activity is Sandi Miller.

Statement of Work- Assessment of Residual Stress in Ultrasonically Welded Single Lap Shear Coupons
The objective evaluate the effect of weld stack crystallinity on the strength of ultrasonically welded thermoplastic composites.
NASA provided materials
• T1100/LM-PAEK adherends for process development
• IM7/PEKK adherends for process development
• T1100/LM-PAEK Welds.
- LM-PAEK Film (semi-crystalline and amorphous) Energy Director
- T1100/LM-PAEK adherends (semi-crystalline and amorphous)
• IM7/PEKK Welds.
- PEKK Film (semi-crystalline and amorphous) Energy Director
- IM7/PEKK adherends (semi-crystalline and amorphous)
•The vendor shall schedule and attend weekly review meetings (remote), review welding progress, and provide monthly reports summarizing weld process results.
The vendor shall perform a process development study to ensure welding parameters are appropriate for the NASA-provided thermoplastic composite materials and energy directors. Up to 12 ultrasonic welds shall be performed for process development. Process parameters shall be recorded, such as weld energy, pressure, cycle time, and observed material behavior
The vendor shall perform first 36 welds and deliver to NASA (or directly to the CHESS facility at Cornell University). Welds will be performed using materials by NASA.
The vendor shall provide documentation and observations from the welding of these first 36 samples.
The vendor shall perform up to 60 additional welds for delivery to NASA with supplied materials from NASA.
• Deliver results and samples to NASA
• Provide documentation of any observations from the welding of the samples
