About this file
This is a Statement of Work for NASA requiring analysis of brain MRI data to support research on Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). The vendor shall analyze up to 42 MRI datasets for brain volumetrics and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hydrodynamics using analysis methods previously established in peer-reviewed research and applied to existing NASA datasets, with reference to a 2024 publication by Kramer et al. in the Journal of Applied Physiology detailing the analytical methodology.
The vendor shall work with the NASA Johnson Space Center Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory to obtain MRI data and complete data interpretation and reporting on a yearly basis to support SANS milestones. The base period of performance covers October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2028, with analysis of up to 20 datasets, followed by an option year 1 from October 1, 2028 through September 30, 2029, with analysis of up to 22 additional datasets. Services shall be performed at McGovern Medical School, Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging, University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, Texas. Deliverables include analyzed brain volumetrics and CSF hydrodynamics derived from MRI datasets and interpretation of the data.

Statement of Work
1. Objective/Requirements
Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) is one of the top risks for astronauts. Many factors may lead to the development of SANS. One of the factors is brain changes (e.g. brain volume) after spaceflight. Brain MRI data will be collected will be collected at various time points.
Vendor will analyze brain MRIs for brain volumetrics and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hydrodynamics using same analysis method used previously on NASA datasets. Methods can be found in the following publication - Kramer LA, Hasan KM, Zhang X, et al. Artificial gravity: an effective countermeasure for microgravity-induced headward fluid shift?. J Appl Physiol. 2024 Sep 12;137(5):1071-1081. doi: 10.1152/japplphysiol.00441.2024.
2. Characteristics, Scope, Specs
The vendor shall perform the following duties:
• Work with the NASA Johnson Space Center Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory (POC) to obtain the MRIs.
• Analyze up to 42 MRIs for brain volumetrics and CSF flow using analyses method previously used on NASA datasets.
o Base Period of Performance: Up to 20 data sets o Option year 1: Up to 22 data sets
• Complete data interpretation and reporting in a timely manner to support SANS milestones.
Provide on a yearly basis.
3. Deliverables
• Analyzed brain volumetrics and CSF hydrodynamics derived from MRI datasets
• Interpretation of data.
4. Place of Performance
McGovern Medical School, Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging
University of Texas Health Sciences Center, Houston, TX
5. Period of Performance
Services shall be performed October 1, 2026-September 30, 2029, including 1 option year
Base Period of Performance: 10/1/2026-9/30/2028
