About this file

This is a Statement of Work for the purchase of He-3 Proportional Counter Tubes to support NASA's Neutron Spectrometer Systems (NSS) for lunar missions.

NASA Ames Research Center is procuring 16 He-3 Proportional Counter tubes to enable the fabrication of eight additional NSS units for future robotic lunar missions. These tubes will be integrated into instruments designed to detect neutron counts on the lunar surface and determine water quantity and depth in the lunar regolith. The tubes must meet specific mechanical, material, electrical, and operational specifications: 2-inch diameter by 9-inch active length with flying lead connectors; 304 stainless steel body with alumina ceramic internal insulator; 1.00E+12 ohms resistance and 8 pF capacitance; maximum voltage of 3500 volts and maximum temperature of 90 degrees Celsius; thermal neutron sensitivity of 88.7 cps/nv with a resolution of less than 12 percent; and operating temperature range of -40 to 55 degrees Celsius. NASA will provide the He-3 gas. The contractor must deliver all 16 tubes within 6 weeks of receiving the He-3 gas, with delivery targeted for September 30, 2026, subject to acceptance testing at Lockheed Martin and a minimum one-year warranty against defects. The technical point of contact is Erin Fritzler, Code RE, at NASA Headquarters.

Statement of Work for He3 Proportional Counter Tubes purchase

A. Technical point of contact: Erin Fritzler Code: RE

B. Background/History of requirement NASA Headquarters has expressed interest in NASA Ames Research Center providing additional eight (8) Neutron Spectrometer Systems (NSS) units. To date, six (6) NSS instruments have been fabricated and tested, and due to their high TRL and proven reliability, as well as significant science return, NASA HQ is interested in acquiring additional units for possible use on future robotic lunar missions.

The completed Instrument (which each include two tubes filled with the requested He-3) will detect neutron counts while roving on the lunar surface. The data will then be interpreted to determine the quantity and depth of water in the lunar regolith.
