About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for on-site training in COMSOL Multiphysics software with focus on acoustics and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).

The contractor shall deliver three days of on-site training to ER42 personnel (up to 15 engineers with varying skill levels) scheduled within 90 days of contract award, covering foundational and advanced COMSOL Multiphysics capabilities with emphasis on acoustic modules and single-phase CFD with solver settings as secondary focus. The training must be customized to address specific modeling challenges faced by MSFC engineers, including unsteady flows, vortex shedding, lift-off acoustics, combustion instability, and flow-induced vibrations. Upon completion, participants should be able to model complex multiphysics engineering problems and diagnose convergence issues. The contractor shall deliver recorded training modules within 30 days of contract award, with access maintained for nine months post-delivery, and provide printable training materials in PDF format for NASA distribution and archiving. Additionally, the contractor must provide post-training question-and-answer sessions or support for troubleshooting modeling issues. The contract point of contact is Sean Fischbach at sean.r.fischbach@nasa.gov.

Statement of Work For

On-Site Training for COMSOL Multiphysics with Focus on Acoustics and CFD

1.0 Introduction

Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is responsible for the design, development, and management of launch vehicle and spacecraft systems, including the Space Launch System (SLS). In addition to the SLS program, the MSFC Fluid Dynamics Branch directly supports several other Exploration, Space Operations, and Science programs including Commercial Space and Human Launch Services (HLS). This proposed effort will support these programs through training and development of capabilities.

The Propulsion System and Induced Fluid Dynamic branch (ER42) at MSFC is responsible for all propulsion related fluid dynamic analysis and simulation. A key component of all propulsion related fluid dynamics is the unsteady flow and acoustic environments generated by propulsion devices. ER42 has invested in the use of COMSOL Multiphysics as a tool for modeling complex unsteady flows such as vortex shedding, Lift-Off Acoustics, and Combustion Instability. Launch and landing acoustics are simply acoustics arising from the mixing of exhaust flow with the surrounding atmosphere and its interactions with the ground or launch pad structures. Combustion instabilities involve the interaction of acoustic oscillations with combustion and fluid flow. Flow-induced vibrations arise from flow-acoustic interactions.

COMSOL Multiphysics’ unique capabilities allows the ER42 engineers to model these coupled physics at various levels of complexity. Unfortunately, the experience level and familiarity with the software varies widely necessity focused training and in-person collaboration with modeling experts. This training is expected to enhance the agency’s core competencies and increase modeling efficiency across ER42’s projects.

2.0 Overall Scope

The primary objective of this effort is to provide foundational and advanced level training in COMSOL Multiphysics. The training will focus on acoustic modules with single-phase CFD and solver settings training as a secondary emphasis. Training will include in class participation of up to 15 engineers with skills ranging from new graduates to grey beards.

Example modeling challenges faced by MSFC engineers will be provided ahead of time for inclusion in training material.

3.0 Task Description

The Contractor will customize the course material to strengthen the students’ COMSOL Multiphysics capabilities. They will establish foundational understanding of the tool’s built in acoustic and CFD capabilities. The students will gain familiarity with the software’s ability to be customized for unique circumstances. By the end of the course work the student should be able to model challenging Multiphysics engineering problems and be able to diagnose convergence issues. The training plan will include in person and recorded content. The recorded content will be provided ahead of time to provide a foundation for detailed on-site efforts.

4.0 Documentation

The contractor will provide printable training material for NASA to distribute and archive.

5.0 Deliverables

Three days of on-site training for ER42 personnel, scheduled within 90 days of contract award

Access to recorded training modules for nine months post-delivery Printable training materials in PDF format for distribution and archiving Post-training Q&A session or support for troubleshooting modeling issues

6.0 Period of Performance & Project Management

Recorded content will be delivered within 30 days of contract award. The recorded training will remain available for 9 months after receipt. Onsite training will consist of three days to be scheduled within 90 days of contract award. Contract point of contact will be Sean Fischbach, sean.r.fischbach@nasa.gov.
