About this file
This is a Statement of Work for the implementation of design optimization tools in Loci/CHEM, a NASA analytical tool used for propulsion and test environments. The effort aims to develop aerodynamic contour optimization routines to support NASA Stennis Space Center's development of a new rocket nozzle design. The contractor will build upon the existing Loci/CHEM code base developed by Mississippi State University to create an automated simulation-based optimization workflow.
The contractor is responsible for developing iterative grid deformation capabilities, establishing a framework for generating and managing simulation case files, automating simulation execution, implementing post-processing to evaluate deformation effects on fitness functions, computing sensitivity gradients, and deploying an optimization algorithm that directs deformations toward specified goals. The optimization routines must be compatible with CHEM's existing simulation capabilities, including 2D and axisymmetric spatial domains, SST-based turbulence models, finite-rate chemistry, real-gas equations of state, and multiphase models. Deliverables include source code for all Loci/CHEM and PyLoci tools, a user manual documenting new features, and comprehensive documentation of the demonstration case with optimized contours and convergence history. The contractor shall provide status updates every 4-6 weeks, with demonstration case results delivered before or during April 2027 and a final package of all source code and documentation upon project completion. The performance period runs from the date of award through April 30, 2027, and work will be performed at contractor facilities. NASA Stennis Space Center, MS 39529 serves as the point of contact.

Statement of Work:
Implementation of Design Optimization Tools in Loci/CHEM
Purpose: Engineers at NASA Stennis Space Center are developing a new type of rocket nozzle. Demonstrating its performance potential will require aerodynamic contour optimization. This effort will develop routines to allow Loci/CHEM, the Agency’s workhouse analytical tool for propulsion/test environments, to perform that function.
Scope: This project will make use of the existing Loci/CHEM code base developed by Mississippi State University as a foundation upon which to build aerodynamic optimization routines.
The contractor will be responsible for all efforts necessary to automate a simulation-based optimization workflow. This will likely involve the following:
a) Iterative, constrained deformation of a computational grid representing a given initial geometry.
b) A framework for generating, organizing, and manipulating simulation case files for the deformed grids.
c) Automated execution of deformed-grid simulations.
d) Any post-processing needed to evaluate deformation effects on a given ‘fitness function’ based on simulation output.
e) Computation of sensitivity gradients based on those simulations.
f) Implementation of an optimization algorithm which ‘steers’ the deformations toward a specified goal
(minimization/maximization of the fitness function).
g) A method of tracking and reporting on the efficacy/progress of that algorithm.
Once the optimization workflow has been developed, the contractor shall prove its efficacy via application to a NASA-supplied demonstration case (likely the thrust maximization of an axisymmetric, steady-state, reacting-flow aerospike nozzle contour).
Requirements:
The optimization routines described above must be broadly compatible with CHEM’s existing simulation capabilities. These include: 2D and axisymmetric spatial domains, SST-based turbulence models, finite-rate chemistry, real-gas equations of state, multiphase models (condensation), steady-state and transient simulations, etc.
Deliverables:
- Source code for all Loci/CHEM and PyLoci tools required for the automated optimization workflow.
- A ‘user manual’ documenting the new features.
- Documentation of demonstration case effort including optimized contours, optimization convergence history
(fitness function value vs. iteration), etc.
Work Location: Contractor Facilities
Performance Period: Date of award – April 30, 2027
Deliverables Schedule: The contractor shall provide a brief status update every 4-6 weeks, with informal discussions to be held as needed. Results of the demonstration case shall be delivered before or during April 2027. A final package containing all relevant source code and documentation shall be delivered upon project completion.
