About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) from NASA Ames Research Center's Center for Life Detection Facility (CLD) for the procurement of a specialized analytical instrument system.
The CLD Facility requires a high-sensitivity, cleanroom-compatible Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer integrated with an FTIR microscope featuring Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) capability. The system will be used to measure and characterize organic contamination on facility hardware and equipment within the nested ISO-8, ISO-6, and ISO-5 cleanroom environment. Based on market research, NASA has determined that the Thermo Scientific Nicolet Apex FTIR Spectrometer with RaptIR+IR Microscope uniquely meets facility requirements, indicating a single-source procurement approach.
The FTIR spectrometer must deliver signal-to-noise better than 50,000:1, 0.25 cm⁻¹ resolution, and 7,800–350 cm⁻¹ spectral range, with full processing and analysis tools, KBR external sample beam port, and pass-through mirror assembly. The integrated FTIR microscope must include 4x and 15x objectives, 1 micron visual and 5 micron infrared spatial resolution, motorized positioning stage with sub-2-micron software control reproducibility, thermoelectrically cooled detector, 350 micron Ge Tip ATR with automated contact alert, digital color video camera, comprehensive automation software with ATR spectra library, and vendor-provided user training. Delivery is required to Building N239 Room 432 at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, with a desired delivery date of September 30, 2026.

1. Objective/Requirements The ARC CLD Cleanroom Facility requires a high-sensitivity cleanroom compatible Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and FTIR microscope with Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) capability for measurement and characterization of facility and hardware organic contamination. The new CLD Facility is a nested ISO-8, ISO-6, and ISO-5 cleanroom environment designed for the development of in-situ life detection technologies and science verification. The facility and its projects have strict biological and organic chemical contamination-control requirements, which demand on-going monitoring of contamination levels to ensure that science and technology products meet required cleanliness levels. The FTIR-spectrometer and -microscope, is required for the measurement of facility, equipment, and product surface organic contamination levels. After market research, it has been determined (see attached Recommendation and Determination to Solicit from One Source) that the Thermo Scientific Nicolet Apex FTIR Spectrometer with a RaptIR+IR Microscope uniquely meets the CLD facility needs and requirements.
