About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for moderate altitude testing research involving physiological and cognitive data collection from 12 participants over a five-week period. The vendor must screen and select study participants, collect baseline measurements during one week at low altitude (~baseline) followed by four consecutive weeks at moderate altitude (~2,300 meters), and deliver all data, samples, and analysis by December 1, 2026.
The vendor's primary responsibilities include implementing five test protocols: (1) Cognitive Performance using Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics (ANAM) administered across six sessions totaling 60 minutes for familiarization plus 30 minutes per subsequent session; (2) Assessment of Acute Mountain Sickness via Lake Louise scoring questionnaire and visual analog scale for wellbeing, administered twice daily during specified test days; (3) Sleep Quality and Duration monitoring using continuous actigraphy wristbands and the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale; (4) symptom documentation for altitude-related conditions (AMS, HAPE, HACE) as reported by medical staff; and (5) Immunological and Inflammatory Responses through morning saliva collection on specific test days to assess herpesvirus reactivation and stress biomarkers. The vendor must provide all personnel, coordinate logistics, deliver electronic data to NASA, maintain cold storage (-20°C) for saliva samples, arrange laboratory analysis and shipment, cover analysis costs, and coordinate return of NASA hardware (actigraphy devices). Participant demographics and health data must be shared with NASA, and comprehensive symptom documentation must capture both scheduled assessments and spontaneously reported manifestations.

Moderate Altitude testing STATEMENT OF WORK
The vendor will provide physiological and cognitive test data collection for 12 participants to characterize health and performance outcomes of low and moderate altitude exposure. The data collection will include data from one (1) week at low altitude (LA) for baseline measurements followed by four (4) consecutive weeks at a moderate altitude (MA, ~2300 meters). The vendor will screen and select the study participants and share the relevant demographics and health data with
NASA.
Data collection, data delivery and sample collection will be completed by December 1, 2026. See data collection descriptions and schedule below.
Test Descriptions Cognitive Performance Cognitive performance will be quantified using the Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics (ANAM), which is a suite of computer-based tests designed to measure cognitive function at a single time-point or longitudinally to detect changes in cognitive function. A total of 6 sessions will be completed at low altitude before ascending to moderate altitude. Subjects first will participate in a 60-minute familiarization session at the vendor’s location. For subsequent sessions, subjects will perform ANAM once per day (30 minutes) at approximately same time of day. After the familiarization session, subjects will self-administer two tests at home before returning to the facility after the familiarization, and 3 baseline measures will be collected at the facility at low altitude. See schedule below for detailed schedule of low and high-altitude test sessions.
Assessment of Acute Mountain Sickness and Other Symptoms To quantify hypoxia-related symptomatology, participants will complete the Lake Louise Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) scoring questionnaire at low altitude and at moderate altitude. The AMS score reflects the sum of 5 symptom items rated on a 0-3 scale. Consistent with standard criteria, AMS is diagnosed when a participant reports a headache plus at least 1 additional symptom – gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue and/or weakness, dizziness and/or lightheadedness – with a total score of 3 points or greater. See details of testing schedule below.
In addition to these structured measures, test operators and the attending medical officer(s) will document the occurrence, time, and date symptoms reported during the study, whether elicited during scheduled assessments or spontaneously communicated by participants. This combined approach ensures comprehensive capture of both expected and unexpected manifestations of acute hypobaric hypoxia.
Sleep Quality and Duration Participants will wear an actigraphy monitor wristband or lanyard continuously during the low altitude baseline measurement days and during the moderate altitude exposure to identify potential variations in sleep. Subjects also will complete the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale. See the detailed schedule below.
Immunological and Inflammatory Responses At least 1 ml of passive drool saliva will be collected in the morning to determine the reactivation pattern of latent herpesviruses (a clinically relevant biomarker for immune dysregulation) as well as salivary stress biomarkers. See the detailed data collection below.
