About this file
This document outlines the requirements and specifications for a specialized astronomical instrument procurement by NASA Langley Research Center. The government seeks to procure a C-RED 2 camera from Andor/Oxford Instruments, identified through market research as the only product meeting the specific technical requirements for stellar occultation observations. The camera must deliver high-speed imaging capabilities at 300-1,000 frames per second with low noise levels below 1,000 electrons per second, operate in the near-infrared spectrum (0.9-1.5 microns), and maintain a cooling capability of -40°C. Critical performance specifications include very low overhead between exposures (less than 0.1% of exposure time), external GPS triggering capability, and high-speed interface compatibility with a control computer.
The required delivery lead time is 12 weeks, with a delivery deadline of October 18, 2026. The equipment shall be delivered to NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia 23681-2199. The procurement document confirms that Andor provides technical support for this astronomical application and that the C-RED 2 camera uniquely satisfies all specified technical and operational requirements for this specialized observation instrument.

Requirements / Specifications:
• We are building an astronomical instrument designed for observing stellar occultations.
To that end, we need a camera capable of high-speed (300-1000 fps), low-noise (<1000 elections per second), near-infrared (0.9-1.5 microns) observations, with low cooling capability (-40 C). It must have very low overhead, meaning the time between subsequent exposures is less than 0.1% of the exposure. It must also be able to be externally triggered from a GPS and have high-speed interface with a control computer. From our market research, we have determined the C-RED 2 from Andor/Oxford Instruments is the only product that meets these specifications. The C-RED 2 is a professional astronomical camera and Andor has support for our astronomical use case.
• Required delivery lead time: 12 weeks (2026/10/18).
• Delivery address:
NASA Langley Research Center Hampton, VA 23681-2199
