About this file
This is a Statement of Work for the procurement of a dual comb laser system (DLC CTL 1050) for NASA Ames Research Center's COSMIC simulation chamber.
The procurement requires a SmartComb frequency comb laser system with specific performance specifications including a 250 MHz comb mode spacing, 1560 nm center wavelength, and greater than 10 mW average power. The system must achieve stability of less than 5x10^-15 (RF Reference Lock) or less than 5x10^-18 (Optical Reference Lock) in 1000 seconds, and accuracy of less than 1x10^-14 or 1x10^-17 respectively for timescales greater than 100 seconds. The system must include an M-NIR extension covering the 1050-2100 nm spectral range with free-space output port power exceeding 200 mW. The dual comb laser will provide high-accuracy absorption spectroscopic data for exoplanetary molecules in the 1-2 micrometer region to improve atmospheric modeling for JWST and future HWO observations. The scope includes measuring absolute line positions and pressure broadening coefficients at high temperatures with various broadening gases. The Statement of Work emphasizes Menlo Systems' experience with over 400 frequency comb systems in operation, proprietary ultra-low-noise figure-9 oscillator technology, full control over repetition rate and carrier envelope offset frequency, and inclusion of installation and user training with system delivery. Delivery is required as soon as possible. NASA POC information is provided but redacted in the document.

STATEMENT OF WORK FOR
DLC CTL 1050 in NASA Ames COSMIC lab
Note: Only use the sections that are applicable to your service procurement.
Background/ Scope A dual comb laser will be added to the Cosmic Simulation chamber at NASA Ames to provide high accuracy absorption data for key exoplanetary molecules in the 1-2 um region.
Spectroscopic data including absolute line positions and pressure broadening coefficients at high temperatures with different broadening gases will be measured to improve atmospheric modeling of exoplanetary atmospheres to help interpret current (JWST) and future HWO observations.

Menlo Systems Unique Selling Points:
1. More than 400 frequency comb systems in the field
a. Unrivaled experience in frequency combs.
b. User friendly and reliable combs for 24/7 operation.
c. Capability proven in world leading laboratories.
d. Installation and user training included for every delivered system.
2. Comb Performance and Qualification
a. Unrivaled performance regarding phase noise, accuracy and stability.
b. Every system is qualified against our in house state of the art comb reference system.
The measurement data is included in the delivered test report.
c. Direct, out of loop comb-comb-comparison proves by measurement that the outstanding spectral purity of the oscillator is transferred perfectly to the desired wavelength within 500-2020 nm.
3. Full control over repetition rate and carrier envelope offset frequency
a. Enables the user to control the absolute position of the comb lines and their spacing independently. Needed, e.g.
i. To match different comb modes exactly to different reference cavities.
ii. To freely adjust comb modes to produce beat signals with different CW lasers within a suitable frequency-range. CW lasers too close to a comb mode, or right in the middle of 2 comb modes, cannot be stabilized to a local reference oscillator which operates in the 10th of MHz domain. The absolute CW laser frequencies are often defined by the application (atomic transitions etc.). The comb has to be adapted to the given CW frequency set.
4. Ultra-Low-Noise figure 9 oscillator technology
a. Robust and reliable
b. Turnkey: mode-locked within seconds
c. No degrading parts
d. Fast intra-cavity actuators for lowest phase noise (Bandwidth > 1 MHz)
e. Spectral purity transfer: only fig-9 ULN technology can provide sub-
Hz linewidth of all comb lines over the entire comb spectrum, including comb extensions from 500-2020 nm.
f. Proprietary of Menlo Systems
(US8873601B2, EP2637265A1, US9705279B2, EP3041093B1)
5. 250 MHz repetition rate
a. Comb lines are easier to filter with an optical grating, wavemeter or in the RF domain
b. More power per comb line leads to higher SNR Beat signals (Compared to e.g. 80 MHz with same average power)
c. Ideal to produce ultra-low-noise microwaves in the GHz range since 250 MHz = ¼ GHz
d. The unambiguity range for dual comb spectroscopy scales with the square of the repetition rate. A high repetition rate is therefore preferable.
6. Widely tunable repetition rate
a. Enables the user to determine the absolute comb mode number
b. Ideal for spectroscopy and dual comb applications e.g.
c. Ideal for Quantum laser systems in which a large set of different CW lasers is locked to the comb.
d. Repetition rate can be tuned from 248-252 MHz
7. f-2f interferometer
a. Robust and maintenance free
b. CEO lock is stable over months
c. Fully fiber coupled f-2f interferometer delivers high SNR beatsignal (>
35 dB) in the RF domain at the carrier envelope offset frequency
d. Proprietary of Menlo Systems till 10.03.2020
(WO2000055948A1, US6785303B1, EP1161782B1, DE19911103,
JP4668423)
8. Beat detection units
a. Fully fiber coupled, easy to use
b. Compact, robust, no moving parts
c. Delivering highest SNR beat signals between comb and CW laser light.
d. Fully fiber coupled and broadband free space options available
e. Proprietary of Menlo Systems (US8995796B2, DE102011122232A1, EP2608327A1)
