About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the NASA PERISCOPE project (Perovskite In Space Construction and Production Experiment) to be performed by Angstrom Designs.
The project aims to translate perovskite solar cell architecture to an architecture compatible with in-space manufacturing and identify payload requirements for manufacturing perovskite photovoltaic devices in space. Angstrom Designs will research and develop a six-pixel fully instrumented Aerospace Measurement Unit (AMU) to measure NLR racetrack design perovskite-based photovoltaics. The contractor will receive flight-ready solar cells six months prior to the Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) mission launch, integrate them into the Orbital Electronics Lab (OEL), and conduct real-time measurements throughout the six-month space flight. All work will be performed at Angstrom Designs' facility in Santa Barbara, California, with a 36-month period of performance from the award date.
Key deliverables include providing at least eight flight samples and eight ground-based control solar cells, with delivery by the identified MISSE flight deadline; conducting data analysis during and after the flight; and providing monthly images of samples during flight. Additional tasks require customizing the measurement algorithm to maintain flight substrates at desired electrical conditions (short circuit current, open circuit voltage, maximum power point, and set load), providing monthly images, and conducting monthly meetings with the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) team. Project completion is achieved after AMU instrumentation is developed, all solar cell samples are integrated into the OEL, active flight cells are held at desired operating conditions, and current-voltage data and flight samples are returned to GRC after the cells return from orbit approximately nine months after launch.

Statement of Work (SOW) for NASA PERISCOPE
Angstrom Designs
Project Objectives: PERISCOPE (Perovskite In Space Construction and Production Experiment) is a GCD project that aims to translate our champion perovskite solar cell architecture to an architecture compatible with in-space manufacturing. We also aim to identify the requirements of a payload that would be capable of manufacturing a perovskite photovoltaic device in space. Space flight is critical to the advancement of TRL for this work. We will fabricate and deliver perovskite-based cells to fly on an upcoming materials international space station experiment (MISSE) mission and Angstrom Designs will enable real-time measurement of cell parameters in flight.
Scope of Work: Angstrom Designs will research and develop a six pixel fully instrumented Aerospace Measurement Unit (AMU) to measure NLR racetrack design perovskite-based photovoltaics. Cells will be shipped to Angstrom Designs six months ahead of the MISSE launch date to be integrated into the Orbital Electronics Lab (OEL). OEL will deliver data during the MISSE flight and lasting the duration of the space flight (6 months). Cells are expected to return to Earth 9 months after launch and OEL will return the cells to NASA GRC after de-integrating the flight samples from the OEL.
Location of Work: All work will be completed at Angstrom Designs in Santa Barbara, CA.
Project Tasks:
1. Research and develop modifications to 6 pixel fully instrumented measurement of NLR racetrack configured perovskite-based photovoltaics using the Aerospace Measurement Unit (AMU).
2. Actively fly 8 substrates on the OEL while actively characterizing them in flight including current-voltage measurement (IV curve, forward and reverse), with temperature and sun angle.
3. Provide monthly images of samples during flight.
4. Customize the measurement algorithm to hold flight substrates at desired electrical conditions including short circuit current, open circuit voltage, max power point, and a set load (i.e: left of knee) as requested by GRC between measurements.
5. Meet monthly with the GRC team to address questions, provide guidance on using OEL data dashboard.
Period of Performance: 36 months from Award Date.
Deliverables:
Associated Task Deliverable Estimated Completion 1, 2, 5 1.1 Deliver solar cells at least 8 flight samples and 8 ground-based controls.
Flight samples and controls will be delivered to Angstrom Engineering OEL at the deadline identified for the MISSE flight.
3, 4, 5 1.2 Conduct data analysis during and after flight
Flight samples will return from ISS after the MISSE flight has concluded.
Project Completion: The project is completed after all of the follow have been met: an AMU instrumentation has been developed to support the racetrack substrates, all solar cell samples have been integrated into the Orbital Electronics Laboratory by Angstrom Designs, the active flight cells were held at the desired operating conditions during flight, and current-voltage data and all flight samples were returned to GRC.
