About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) supporting the development of a novel microwave ignitor system under the center's Advanced Space Propulsion Formulation Task.

The contractor must deliver three key items: (1) an Electromagnetic (EM) simulation study, (2) a GMS450 solid-state 2.45GHz microwave generator with 450W capacity and water cooling, and (3) LMR600 low loss coaxial cable (one unit each). The EM simulation shall be exploratory in nature and provide three to four solution candidates, including evaluation of the Auburn spark igniter SI-140 AJ41, with qualitative assessment of strengths and weaknesses. The simulation must model a combustion chamber operating at 1 to 2 atmospheres with gaseous methane and oxygen propellant flow ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 lbm/s. The contractor shall evaluate different microwave transmission techniques (needle, coaxial lines) and material/geometry variations. Key simulation metrics include electric field analysis on the system, comparison to spark-creation thresholds, linkage between electric field intensity and microwave system power, and S-parameter tuning/adaptation of the microwave system. The contractor shall present findings in a report and meeting to the client. All deliverables must be shipped to Central Receiving, Building 4631, Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama 35812, Attention: Dalton Carpenter, ER12.

Microwave Generator and Electromagnetic Study for Use with Microwave Ignitor

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Objective/Requirements

NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) requires the capability to test a novel microwave ignitor system. Acquiring a device capable of generating a microwave spark and a first order simulation will be instrumental in developing this new technology. This effort is in support of the center’s Advanced Space Propulsion Formulation Task.

2. Engineering Requirements

• Solid State 2.45GHz microwave generator

• Low Loss Coaxial Cabel

• Electromagnetic simulation of a system

3. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs of Simulation

The vendor shall develop an Electromagnetic (EM) simulation of the system. The combustion chamber shall operate at 1 to 2 atmospheres with a propellant flow of gaseous mixed methane and oxygen with a mass flow rating from 0.1 to 1.0 lbm/s.

EM Simulation: Will be exploratory and provide solution candidates (3 to 4 candidates, to include the Auburn spark igniter SI-140 AJ41) with a qualitative assessment of their strengths and weakness. A report and meeting will be presented to the client. Different MW transmission techniques to be studied (needle, coaxial lines…) and Different materials and/or geometries.

Metrics from EM Simulation: Electric field on the system and comparison to the order of magnitude needed to create a spark, Link between electric field intensity and the MW system's power, Adaptation/tuning of the MW system (S-parameters)

4. Shipping:

Contractor shall ship all deliverables to:

Central Receiving, Bldg. 4631 Attn: Dalton Carpenter, ER12 Marshall Space Flight Center Huntsville, AL 35812

5. Deliverables

1. EM Simulation Study

2. GMS450, 450W, Solid-State 2.45GHz Microwave Generator, Water-cooled, Quantity 1

2. LMR600 Low Loss Coaxial Cable, Quantity 1
