JBK-75-AM Alloy Atomized Powder Specification
This is a material specification document issued by NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) for procurement of JBK-75-AM atomized metal powder, dated November 2, 2018, Revision 1.
The specification requires vendors to supply 2,635 pounds of JBK-75-AM1 powder with particle size distribution of -140 mesh/+325 mesh (105 micrometers/45 micrometers). The powder must be produced using vacuum or inert induction melting with gas or rotary atomization in argon or helium, utilizing virgin melt stock, master alloys, or controlled purity solid revert. The chemical composition must conform to AMS 5811 standards, with iron ranging from 48.01–54.24 weight percent, nickel from 29.0–31.0 percent, chromium from 13.5–16.0 percent, and specified minimums and maximums for molybdenum, titanium, vanadium, aluminum, and trace elements including sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, silicon, boron, manganese, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Chemical composition verification must be performed per ASTM E1019 for carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen, with other elements verified by wet chemical analysis per ASTM E354 or inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy per ASTM E2594. Particle size distribution must be certified per ASTM B214 and ASTM B822, with particles greater than +140 mesh limited to 1.0 weight percent maximum and particles smaller than +325 mesh limited to 5.0 weight percent maximum. The powder must be primarily spherical with smooth surfaces, free of significant satellite particles, and must be packaged in air-tight, inert gas-filled containers no larger than 20 kilograms each. Vendors must deliver Certificates of Conformance specifying lot number, production date and facility location, and verification of compliance to all specification requirements. Delivery is required within six months after award.

NASA Marshall Space Flight Center MSFC JBK-75-AM Date Issued: 11/2/18
Revision: 1
JBK-75-AM Alloy Atomized Powder Specification
1. The JBK-75-AM powder shall be produced using vacuum or inert induction melting utilizing gas or rotary atomization in argon or helium. The furnace charge for production will consist of master alloys, virgin melt stock, solid revert of controlled purity, or any combination thereof.
2. Unless explicitly specified by the purchase request, the requested quantity of powder shall be supplied as a single lot. The single lot may be supplied as a blend of multiple heat lots. Blending of multiple heat lots into a single lot is allowed only if every lot blended is verified independently to meet all aspects of this specification. Heat lot numbers and their independent certification will be provided for each blended lot. Blending of heat lots will not be used to control chemistry or particle size distribution. Blending of heat lots will not occur other than at the original powder producer.
3. The JBK-75-AM powder shall have composition as shown in Table 1 per AMS 5811.
Table 1. JBK-75-AM Powder Composition (weight %)
Element Maximum Minimum Iron 54.24 48.01 Nickel 31.0 29.0 Chromium 16.0 13.5 Molybdenum 1.5 1.0 Titanium 2.3 2.0 Vanadium 0.5 0.1 Aluminum 0.35 0.15 Sulfur .005 - Phosphorus .006 - Carbon 0.030 0.010 Silicon 0.10 - Boron 0.002 0.0005 Manganese 0.2 - Hydrogen 15 ppm - Oxygen 0.03 (300 ppm) - Nitrogen 0.03 (300 ppm) -
4. Chemical composition shall be verified for carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen per ASTM E1019.
Other elements of Table 1 shall be verified by wet chemical methods per ASTM E354 or inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy per ASTM E2594. Other methods may be used if agreed upon prior to contract award. Chemical check analysis limits of SAE AMS 2269 are applicable.
5. The JBK-75-AM powder particle size distribution (PSD) shall target the ranges listed in Table 2.
The supplier shall furnish a certification for each powder lot per ASTM B214 (Sieve Analysis) and ASTM B822 (Light Scattering) including analysis for the mesh size, name of analyzing lab, the date analyzed, and analysis method. Other methods may be used if agreed upon prior to contract award.

Powder Mesh or Micron Size Notes JBK-75-AM1 -140 mesh/+325 mesh
(105 um/45 um)
1. Particles greater than +140 mesh shall be
2. Particles smaller than +325 mesh shall be limited to < 5.0 weight % per ASTM B214
JBK-75-AM2 +325 mesh/1250 mesh (45 um/+10 um)
1. Particles greater than +325 mesh shall be
2. Particles smaller than 10 (um) shall be limited per ASTM B822
6. JBK-75-AM powder shall be primarily spherical in shape, free of significant satellite particles, and have smooth surfaces. Powder vendor may meet these requirements by supplying images of a mono-layer sample of the powder lot of approximately 0.5 cm2 area at sufficient magnification/resolution to observe particle shape and confirm the absence of significant satellite particles. Powder sampling must meet minimum acceptable methods as defined in
ASTM B215.
7. Post-production additions to the powder lot for control of PSD or chemistry are not allowed.
8. The JBK-75-process allows. All exposures to atmosphere during handling and processing will be described prior to processing, and allowed with pre-approval by NASA. JBK-75-AM powder shall be packaged in air-tight, inert gas filled containers or drums no larger than 20 kg each.
9. The JBK-75-AM powder shall be delivered with Certificates of Conformance (CoC) specifying lot number, and the date and facility location of powder production, and verification of compliance to all requirements listed in this specification. If the provided lot of powder is a blend of heat lots, the CoC must contain compliance information for each blended lot.
Deliverables
1. Vendor shall supply 2,635 pounds of JBK-75-AM1 (-140/+325 mesh) according to above requirements and per Table 2 sizes and all process certifications.
2. JBK-75-AM1 powders may be produced in individual lots, if necessary.
3. Vendor must ship within 6 months after award is made.
