About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the fabrication of stainless steel 316 (SS316) subscale printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) recuperator plates and plate stacks for NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).
The work encompasses three tasks to support cryocooler development for methane liquefaction testing. Task 1 requires fabrication of 10 individual chemically etched and machined 0.025" SS316 annealed flat plates per drawing MER08397-003, with dimensional inspection to ±0.004" tolerances and quality control per AS9100D/ISO9001:2015. Task 2 calls for fabrication and diffusion bonding of three (3) PCHE cores, each composed of 32 stacked plates (0.05" plates at layers 1 and 32, with 0.025" plates at layers 2-31) per drawing MER08380-001, with dimensional tolerances of ±0.004" for 0.025" plates and ±0.010" for 0.05" plates. Task 3 requires fabrication and diffusion bonding of two (2) alternate PCHE cores using identical specifications per drawing MER08935-001. All work must be performed offsite by a vendor with a maximum period of performance of 8 weeks from contract award. The vendor must supply all fabricated components, inspection reports, and documentation, with shipping to Marshall Space Flight Center Central Receiving in Huntsville, Alabama. The vendor is not required to procure additional molybdenum block tooling for the diffusion bonding process.

Fabrication of SS316 Subscale PCHE Recuperator Plates and Plate Stacks via
Photochemical Etching and Diffusion Bonding
STATEMENT OF WORK
1. Objective/Requirements
NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) requires fabrication of recuperator components for testing in cryocooler environments to achieve milestones outlined by the Cryogenic Fluid
Management Portfolio Office (CFMPP) and cryocooler development team. This effort aims to liquefy methane using a thermodynamic system with components designed by the cryocooler development team. One such component is the recuperator which is to be made with stainless steel 316 flat plates using chemical etching and diffusion bonding processes.
2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs
The vendor shall provide fabrication and inspection of part with the following requirements:
Task 1: Fabrication of Stainless Steel 316 Flat Plates per MER08397-003.
The objective of this task is to provide chemically etched and machined plates as outlined in the MER08397-003.
• Vendor shall procure 0.025” SS316, annealed flat plates.
• Vendor shall machine and chemically etch 0.025” SS316, annealed flat plates to desired geometries based on drawing MER08397-003.
• Vendor shall dimensionally inspect etched plates to ensure geometries within +/- 0.004” tolerances called out in drawings.
o Vendor shall contact MSFC if dimension tolerances cannot be met.
• Vendor shall ship all deliverable parts to NASA MSFC upon completion.
• Vendor shall supply inspection reports to NASA MSFC included in shipment.
• Vendor shall quality control all parts per AS9100D / ISO9001:2015.
