About this file

This is a Statement of Work for cryogenic testing of polymer matrix composite materials for cryotank applications. The work will be performed by Composite Technology Development, Inc. (CTD) and involves mechanical testing of two composite systems—a thermoplastic T1100 carbon fiber/TC1225 Low-melt polyaryletherketone (LM-PAEK) and a thermoset T1100/3960 epoxy resin, both sourced from Toray—at three temperature conditions: room temperature, 20 Kelvin (liquid hydrogen temperature), and 111 Kelvin (liquid natural gas temperature). In total, 104 coupons will be tested across three blocks to support NASA Glenn Research Center's development of fuel-efficient and lower-carbon emission aerospace transportation technologies.

The vendor is responsible for receiving composite panels and neat resin plaques fabricated by NASA GRC, cutting and preparing all coupons according to detailed specifications provided via PowerPoint (including 0° orientation cuts, photographic documentation for approval, and specific tabbing requirements), and completing tension tests, thermal expansion tests, and fracture toughness tests using ASTM standards D3039, D638, Modified D5335, and D5045. Block 1 includes laminate tension testing of four composite/resin variations at multiple temperatures with specified quantities. Block 2 comprises neat resin tension testing and thermal expansion testing. Block 3 involves thermal expansion and fracture toughness testing on neat resins and composites. Deliverables include complete test reports with raw data in Excel spreadsheet or .csv format suitable for analysis, fractured specimens, and a summary report due within 6-8 weeks of material receipt. Payment is structured in three milestone-based blocks corresponding to completion of each testing phase.

Statement of Work- Cryogenic Testing of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials for Cryotank Application

Summary

The goal is to mechanically test selected polymer matrix composites and resins at cryogenic temperatures (20 degrees Kelvin/ Liquid hydrogen (LH2) temperature and 111 K/ Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) temperature) relevant to a cryotank application. The testing work will be completed at Composite Technology Development, Inc. (CTD). The composites are a thermoplastic T1100 carbon fiber (CF)/TC1225 Low-melt polyaryletherketone (LM-PAEK) and a thermoset T1100/3960 epoxy resin, both from Toray. In total, 104 coupons will be tested in 3 blocks.

Complete testing of the composites and resins at varying temperatures, particularly at 20 K and 111 K, are crucial to cryotank development. This collected data is essential to modeling and design efforts moving forward at relevant LH2 and LNG temperatures. The coordination of this work is relevant to NASA Glenn’s interest to develop more fuel-efficient and lower carbon emission airspace transportation. Completed tests will include tension, compact tension (toughness), and thermal expansion for the composites and resins.

Tasks

Vendor shall test thermoplastic and thermoset composites and neat resins at room temperature, LH2 temperature (20 K), and LNG temperature (111 K). This summary and raw data will be collected and sent back to NASA to fully characterize these materials.

Composite Panel Fabrication, Neat Resin Panels, and Coupon Machining

NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) will fabricate all composite panels and procure neat resin plaques needed for testing.

• Composite panels and resin plaques will be shipped to CTD together at the same time.

• Detailed cut plans will be provided to CTD through a PowerPoint. The cut plans will include details such as quantity, how to label coupons, where to cut from the panel, ASTM Standard, and more.

• CTD shall cut and prepare all coupons included in this Statement of Work.

• Cut along 0° orientation. Labeled on panel.

• Send photographs of sample prior to cut to NASA for approval.

• Tabbing requirements: coupons on panels labeled for “0T” tension only shall be tabbed with 0.5” x 2.25” glass fiber tabs with a 7° taper. These coupon dimensions are 0.5” x 10”.

• Tabbing requirements: coupons on panels labeled for “QI” Tension only shall be tabbed with glass fiber (G-10) tabs following ASTM Standard D3039 requirements.

• CTD will complete testing of tension, thermal expansion, and toughness tests of both the neat resins and composite materials exactly as outlined in the quote provided to NASA on May 29, 2026.

• CTD will provide a full test report of each test to NASA, including raw data and average values.
