About this file
Statement of Work Summary: ASTRAL Materials TechLeap Orbital Mission
This is a Statement of Work for a NASA contract supporting semiconductor manufacturing advancement under the CHIPS and Science Act of 2021. The contractor, who received a NASA SBIR IGNITE Phase II award, is tasked with developing a ground-based prototype of a microgravity-assisted crystal growth furnace to enable the first-ever on-orbit silicon crystal growth. The work supports the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) and In-Space Production Applications (InSPA) Portfolio objectives to establish low-Earth orbit manufacturing capabilities leveraging International Space Station resources.
The primary objectives require the contractor to: verify that the specialized crystal-growth furnace design survives re-entry and recovery while protecting sample material integrity using the SpaceWorks capsule; support detailed post-mission evaluation of flight and terrestrial control samples; develop a terrestrial analog unit for ground-based testing and control specimen synthesis; compile results correlating process conditions with material quality; and arrange independent evaluation of pre- and post-flight silicon samples, with NASA retaining the option for additional evaluation. Deliverables include quarterly reports, a Flight-Unit Environmental Testing Report (60 days), Science Requirements Document (120 days), Test Plan (180 days), Initial Ground Qualification Samples (300 days), Mission Update Report with Optimized Samples (360 days), Post-Mission Summary Report (within 15 days of re-entry), and Final Report with Flight Samples (December 1, 2027). The period of performance extends from award through September 2028, with all work performed according to accepted industry practices. Shipping is directed to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

ASTRAL MATERIALS TECHLEAP ORBITAL MISSION
STATEMENT OF WORK
Advancement of semiconductor manufacturing techniques and materials consistent with the priorities of CHIPS for America under the CHIPS and Science Act of 2021 (https://www.nist.gov/chips) is essential to maintaining United States leadership in mance semiconductor technologies for both terrestrial and space applications. Within NASA, the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) Enable Domain develops and ers, and other government agencies. As part of these efforts, the In-Space Manufacturing (ISM) development of the skills, processes, and institutional capacity necessary to integrate these In-Space
Production Applications (InSPA) Portfoli orbit (LEO) production opportunities that address national needs or provide public benefit by leveraging the resources of the International Space Station (ISS).
To advance these aligned goals, the contractor has received a NASA SBIR IGNITE Phase II award to develop a ground-based prototype of a microgravity-assisted crystal growth furnace capable of enabling the first-ever on-orbit silicon crystal growth. This award supports the development and evaluation of the necessary hardware to enable successful payload retrieval, post-flight materials evaluation and analysis, and reporting to the Government. This work strengthens integration between STMD and InSPA objectives and maximizes the mission impact of the resulting semiconductor technology and materials development.
This TechLeap demonstration reduces key technological and operational risks needed to enable
