About this file

This is a Product Specifications document for acoustic imaging equipment required by NASA Langley Research Center to locate air leaks in the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel facility. The 1,000,000 cubic-foot pressure vessel operates below atmospheric pressure and contains hundreds of penetrations that serve as potential leak sources, compromising tunnel pressure stability and test gas purity while incurring significant operational costs (approximately $10 per pound for 200,000 lbs of test gas used annually). The facility requires a hand-held acoustic imager utilizing a multi-microphone directional array to detect ultrasonic noise signatures from leaks across various pressure systems and display them as an augmented reality overlay on a camera feed.

The specified equipment must detect frequencies up to approximately 100 kHz with the capability to filter specific frequency ranges to eliminate background noise from facility equipment and nearby airfield operations. The device must operate reliably across ambient conditions of 20–100 degrees Fahrenheit and 20–90 percent relative humidity, and must be self-contained without requiring external power sources or computer connections. The specified product is a Fluke FLK-II915 acoustic imager with an estimated delivery lead time of 1–2 weeks pending availability. Delivery is required to NASA Langley Research Center, Central Receiving Building 1206, 4 South Marvin Street, Hampton, Virginia 23681, for use by the Transonic Dynamic Tunnel facility.

Product Specifications:

Background Need: The Transonic Dynamics Tunnel is a large pressure vessel that operates in partial vacuum, below atmospheric pressure. This 1,000,000 cu-ft vessel has hundreds of penetrations, all of which are potential sources of air leaks into the tunnel. These leaks change the tunnel pressure over time, and dilute the purity of the test gas, which negatively impacts facility operating efficiency. Additionally, the facility uses upwards of 200,000 lbs of test gas, which costs approximately $10/lb. Facility systems reclaim this gas at the completion of testing, but small leaks in the various piping systems add up to large amounts of money over time. The facility staff needs an ability to quickly locate active leaks in a variety of pressure systems spread across a large, complex facility.

Specifications: The best tool identified for the above purpose is an acoustic imager. The product uses a multi-microphone, directional array to “hear” the ultrasonic noise caused by leaks in various systems. That directional information is then superimposed on a camera picture, creating an augmented reality view of the leak. Facility personnel can pan this hand-held tool around and rapidly see on the screen where noises are.

The ideal product will be able to hear/”see” up into the ultrasonic frequency range, up to ~100kHz, and also provide an ability to filter out certain frequency ranges, eliminating background noise from the picture; this is extremely beneficial at our facility where a lot of equipment is operating and we are near an active airfield with a lot of jet noise.

The equipment needs to operate over the range of ambient temperatures and humidity at the facility, essentially between 20-100 degrees F and 20-90% RH. The equipment will ideally be self-contained (i.e. does not require connection to a computer or external power source for operation).
