About this file

This is a Statement of Work for a high-power laser module required by NASA/MSFC-EM31 (Marshall Space Flight Center, Electromagnetic Systems Division). The government seeks a diode-pumped Ytterbium fiber laser capable of accepting DC input and outputting 1070 nanometer infrared light at either 250 watts continuous or 150 watts average with 1500 watts peak pulsed power. The laser module must have an integral 5-meter delivery fiber with a 50-micron core diameter, armored or encapsulated for protection, and terminated with an (H)LC-8 connector. Additional specifications include a maximum mass of 25 kilograms, wall-plug power draw not exceeding 1100 watts, beam quality of 2 millimeters x milliradians or lower, and inclusion of a Class 2 or lower guide laser.

The deliverables are due within 12 weeks from the date of award. Shipping shall be via freight on a Free On Board Destination basis to NASA/MSFC, Mail Stop EM31, 4639 Saturn Road, Huntsville, Alabama 35812. The laser module and delivery fiber are intended for integration into a modular vacuum chamber and laser enclosure for use on parabolic and orbital flight platforms, replacing an existing 20-meter cable configuration to more accurately replicate flight-like operating conditions.

Statement of Work

Laser module capable of accepting DC input and outputting 150 W average & 1500 W peak or 250 W continuous optical power at infrared wavelengths with a delivery fiber length of 5 m

The government (NASA/MSFC-EM31) requires a capability to operate a high-power laser welding system, especially focusing optics and delivery fiber, integrated into a modular vacuum chamber and laser enclosure capable of mounted to parabolic and orbital flight platforms. The welding laser optics already exist, but a laser module with a shorter cable length than the existing 20 meters long is necessary to more accurately capture flight-like configuration.

The following deliverables are desired:

1. Delivery fiber integral to the laser module

a. Core fiber diameter of 50 micron to limit spot size

b. Length of 5 meters

c. Armored or otherwise encapsulated to protect the optical fiber within

2. Laser module

a. Accepts DC input

b. Outputs 1070 nanometer laser light at

i. 250 W continuous

ii. 150 W average, 1500 W peak pulsed

c. Mass is 25 kg or less

d. Wall-plug power draw is 1100 W or less

e. Includes Class 2 or lower guide laser

f. Beam quality is 2 mm x mrad or lower

g. Is a diode-pumped Yb fiber laser

h. Has an (H)LC-8 connector for termination

These deliverables are expected by 12 weeks from date of award.
