About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirements for synchrotron beam time to conduct Li-ion thermal runaway experiments in Fall 2025. The objective is to obtain high-speed X-ray videography of Li-ion cell internal short circuits within a Fractional Thermal Runaway Calorimeter (FTRC), examining protection mechanisms of plastic current collectors, new electrolytes, and cell enclosure failure mechanisms. Specific technical requirements include 96 continuous hours of beam time for approximately 100 individual Li-ion cell experiments, with X-ray conditions demanding high energy (60-100 keV), high-speed imaging (>2000 frames/second), and two distinct field of view sizes. The facility must provide AC power, benchtop space, a 3m² area for fume hoods, a sample stage capable of positioning 20 kg samples, and waste disposal services for battery materials. Two beam times are planned approximately six months apart, with experiments scheduled in October 2025, and the primary deliverable being radiography data from the tests.

Synchrotron Beam Time for Li-ion Thermal Runaway Experiments in Fall 2025
Statement of Work (SOW)
3 Jun 2025
1.0 Objective – Obtain high speed X-ray videography while triggering an internal short circuit in numerous individual Li-ion cells while inside a Fractional Thermal Runaway Calorimeter (FTRC) for to get insight into the protection mechanism provided by plastic current collectors, new electrolytes, and into cell enclosure failure mechanisms.
2.0 Scope – This involves testing about 100 Li-ion cells per beamtime with and without plastic current collectors and with and without Internal short circuit devices (ISCD). The cell thermal runaway (TR) hazard will be controlled by use of NASA’s small-cell and medium-cell FTRCs which encloses the cell, decelerates the TR ejecta to trap particulates, and routes the gases to a provided filter prior to connection to facility exhaust port. The cells internal short circuits will be triggered via nail penetration or heat. The FTRC will be assembled and disassembled for the next runs in portable fume hoods that look like glove boxes and who are connected to suction and a provided filter prior to connecting to the facility exhaust.
3.0 Background – The FTRC measures the total and fractional heat outputs of Li-ion cells during TR but can only give qualitative judgements of the kinetics and violence of each TR. This system has been successfully and safely used before at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
4.0 Tasks
4.1 Beam Time – Ninety-six continuous hours of beam time is required to enable about 100 individual Li-ion experiments. Access to the hutch and lab facility will be required for 16 hours prior to the 96 hours of beam time for set up and check out of the calorimeter and portable fume hoods. Two beam times are required about six months apart.
4.2 X-ray conditions – The synchrotron must be capable of high X-ray energy (60 keV to 100 keV), high speed (greater than 2000 frames per second), and 2 field of views (21mm x
10mm, 46mm x 23mm) imaging.
4.3 Lab Facility – AC power for our portable cell cyclers, filters, lights, and laptops are required.
Several benchtops are required and a 3 m2 area is needed for our fume hoods for FTRC assembly and disassembly area. Assembly and sample preparation area must be next to the
X-ray hutch.
4.4 Sample environment – A sample stage capable of vertically and horizontally positioning a 20 kg sample is needed.
4.5 Videography Quality – High-speed imaging of greater than 2000 frames per second with a minimum field of view of 46mm x 23 mm, for a greater than 5 seconds is necessary. One field of view change from 21mm x 10mm to 46mm x 23mm) is required per beamtime.
4.6 Other – The beam time facility shall dispose of battery waste and spent fume hood filters. It shall also storage and maintain NASA’s large fume hood in between beam times.
5.0 Period of Performance – Beam times must be scheduled in Oct of 2025.
6.0 Deliverables – Radiography data.
