About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA Langley Research Center's procurement of a high-energy electron source for electron-induced fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. The required system is the Kimball Physics "Custom Electron Gun System, Model EGH-8103/EGPS-8103 Magnetic Lens" or an equivalent, with specific technical requirements including variable output voltage from 10-100 kV, current variability up to 1 mA continuous and 30 mA pulsed, ability to operate in pulsed mode, magnetic/electrostatic beam focusing, and beam deflection capabilities. Additional specifications include compatibility with ultra-high vacuum hardware, USB interface, 110V single-phase power requirements, and included power supply, cabling, control hardware/software, and a user-replaceable cathode module.
The SOW specifies that items will be assembled at the vendor's site and delivered to NASA Langley Research Center within 21 weeks after contract receipt. This is identified as a sole source requirement for a specialized scientific instrument, with the procurement aimed at supporting laboratory-based spectroscopic research involving electron-induced fluorescence. The electron source must operate under precise conditions, including maintaining functionality at ambient pressures up to 10-4 Torr and connecting to a larger vacuum chamber maintained at pressures up to 1 Torr.

STATEMENT OF WORK
1. Objective/Requirements
Procurement of a high-energy electron source for performing electron-induced fluorescence including the primary electron source hardware, control systems, software, high-vacuum pumping systems, and replacement hardware for laboratory-based spectroscopic measurements.
2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs
NASA Langley Research Center is seeking to purchase a high-energy electron source for performing electron-induced fluorescence. The character of the fluorescence depends heavily on the excitation source, and the electron source accordingly must meet certain requirements in terms of voltage, current, stability, beam-focusing ability, durability, and operable pressure ranges. Product shall be Kimball Physics “Custom Electron Gun System, Model EGH-8103/EGPS-8103 Magnetic Lens” or equivalent.
The electron source must meet the following specifications:
o Electron source shall be self-contained and configured so that the electron-emitting end connects to a vacuum chamber and the emitter body is held at ambient pressures.
o Output voltage shall be variable from at least 10 to 100 kV (preferably 1 to 100 kV) o Current shall be variable up to 1 mA (continuous operation) and shall be variable up to 30 mA (pulsed operation) o Electron source shall be able to operate in a pulsed mode (<2 𝜇𝜇s pulses at 5 kHz) o Electron source shall have the ability to magnetically or electrostatically focus the electron beam (collimated or focused beam) with a minimum focal diameter of 1 m at the optimum focus of at least 200 mm away from the exit.
o Electron source shall have the ability to magnetically deflect the electron beam by 1.5 degrees o Electron source shall remain operable at ambient pressures up to 10-4 Torr o Cathode material shall survive limited exposure to ambient gases (specifically, a an Y2O3-coated iridium coil cathode) o The electron source shall come with a power supply, necessary cabling, and control hardware and software, to enable turn-key operation once assembled onto a vacuum chamber with a suitable roughing pump o The electron source shall also come with pumps and hardware necessary for maintaining optimal firing conditions during these circumstances:
o The electron source and pumping hardware will be connected to a larger vacuum chamber maintained at pressures up to 1 Torr by a small aperture o Single- or multiple pumping stages can be employed to maintain the desired operating pressure within the emission source o An additional, user-replaceable cathode or firing module shall be included with the electron source o Electron gun shall be able to interface with Conflat or other standard ultra-high vacuum hardware.
o Rear interface panel shall have USB connection.
o Power requirements: 110 V, single phase connections.
3. Place of Performance
Items shall be assembled at site of vendor and delivered to NASA Langley Research Center.
4. Period of Performance Delivery date of 21 weeks after receipt of contract.
