About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) project to develop in situ gas sensors using nanomaterials for methane detection. The primary objective is to explore compatible nanomaterials like ZIF-8 and copper-doped ZIF-8 for sensing methane in carbon-rich environments, with a goal of achieving parts-per-billion (ppb) sensitivity to address scientific questions about habitability and the origin of life on Mars and other planetary bodies.
The project will be performed over one year from September 15th, 2025 to September 14th, 2026. Key tasks include researching and synthesizing selected materials, conducting material characterization through BET analysis to examine gas adsorption, and collaborating with the NASA GSFC team to fabricate devices. The GSFC team will provide necessary specifications and perform gas testing of the devices, providing feedback on their sensitivity. The research aims to develop advanced nanomaterial-based sensors for detecting trace amounts of methane in extraterrestrial environments.

STATEMENT OF WORK
1. Objective/Requirements NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is developing in situ gas sensors using nanomaterials (PI – Mahmooda Sultana). Parts-per-billion (ppb) sensitivity for methane is needed to address some of the unresolved questions about habitability and the origin of life on Mars and other planetary bodies. The goal of this project will be to explore compatible nanomaterials for methane sensing.
2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs shall perform the following duties:
1. Research of different materials, including ZIF-8 and copper doped ZIF-8, for their potential of methane sensing in a carbon rich environment.
2. Synthesis of the selected materials.
3. Material characterization such as BET analysis to look at adsorption of the target gas.
4. Work with the NASA GSFC team to fabricate devices.
GSFC team is responsible for providing relevant specifications needed. The NASA team will perform gas testing of the devices and provide feedback about the sensitivity of the devices.
3. Period of Performance The work will be performed over 1 year from September 15th 2025 to September 14th
2026.
