About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's procurement of a state-of-the-art 4K digital microscope for analyzing microgravity-grown test samples. The primary objective is to establish an in-house lab environment for rapid testing, evaluation, characterization, and validation of materials developed through in-space manufacturing (InSPA) research. The microscope must have advanced capabilities including 4K resolution, 5x-6,000x magnification, dual camera functionality, multiple lighting types, built-in 2D/3D measurement capabilities, and compatibility with LIBS elemental analysis tools.

The microscope specifications include a minimum 27" UHD LCD monitor, integrated stage camera, license-free viewer software, 1TB hard drive, and advanced performance requirements such as real-time automatic focus adjustment, XY stitching with 1-micron stage positioning, and automatic optimization of lighting settings. The microscope should support advanced measurement capabilities like cleanliness/particle testing (ISO-16232, VDA-19) and metallographic analysis (ASTM-E1382, ASTM-E45). NASA requires delivery of the microscope with all accessories within 15 days of purchase order placement, with no specific milestones, government-furnished property, or government-furnished information noted.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1.0 Introduction/Background:

Space offers a new way of manufacturing that supports industries of the future. The research and development aboard the international Space Station (ISS) under microgravity leading to in-space manufacturing (inSPA) is rapidly expanding. Following the first decade of assembly of the ISS and the subsequent decade of research onboard the ISS National Lab, NASA is now moving boldly into a decade of results with the award of contracts supporting the commercial development of new and promising technologies for in-space manufacturing of advanced materials and products for terrestrial use. NASA’s InSPA portfolio is unique in that it fosters utilization of the ISS for the benefit of the nation and humanity broadly, with no requirement for linkage to NASA’s exploration goals. The ISS remains a critical resource for NASA and its international partners to conduct research and prepare for exploration of the moon and Mars. NASA’s InSPA office in coordination with the ISS National Labs, will continue to utilize the microgravity environment in LEO to prepare astronauts, infrastructure, and equipment for long-duration missions beyond LEO as well as to advance basic and applied research and technology demonstrations for a wide range of U.S. interests. These interests include enhancing national security, strengthening industry leadership, creating high-quality jobs, providing benefits to humanity by developing products that significantly improve the quality of life for people on Earth and finally, enabling the development of an economy in LEO by stimulating demand for scalable and sustainable non-NASA utilization of future commercial LEO destinations.

The investments made so far by NASA is now resulting in new and unique products such as advanced materials that involves exotic glasses and fibers, alloys, ceramics, semiconductors, industrial crystals, large and small molecule crystals, protein crystals for pharmaceuticals, etc. Furthermore, bio-manufacturing is rapidly progressing that include artificial retinas, stem cell reprogramming methodologies, production, and differentiation for personalized medicine, bioprinting of organoids and whole organs, nerve regeneration medical devices, etc. Recant efforts have resulted in groundbreaking discoveries including high quality ZBLAN fibers and artificial retinas which cannot be otherwise possible to develop terrestrially. Many more ongoing projects are promising significant breakthroughs in semiconductors and therapeutic drugs. As such there is a strong need to expeditiously analyze the microgravity grown test samples in-house for validation and subsequently, establish a strong basis for exploring pathways for rapid expansion of commercial LEO economy.
