About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) outlines a NASA research project focused on high-fidelity quantification of AC loss in a novel superconducting motor. The SOW comprises four primary technical objectives: (1) improving AC loss predictions in NASA's Matlab-based motor optimization code by implementing and verifying existing predictions, (2) conducting higher-fidelity AC loss predictions through finite element simulations of the motor that include rotor, stator, and superconductor modeling, (3) measuring AC loss in stacks of 15-50+ HTS tapes to investigate loss suppression and explore different tape configurations and field orientations, and (4) measuring AC loss due to self-field in a racetrack HTS coil.
The technical scope emphasizes computational modeling and experimental measurement, with specific nuances including quasi-static simulations that initially neglect eddy currents, a focus on H-formulation modeling of the superconductor, and extending existing literature on AC loss characterization. The project is marked as a sole-source requirement, indicating a specific vendor or research partner has been identified to execute this specialized scientific investigation into superconducting motor performance and energy loss mechanisms.

Statement of work for “High fidelity quantification of AC loss in a novel superconducting motor”
1. Support to improve the fidelity of AC loss predictions included in NASA’s Matlab-based motor optimization code (not finite element)
1. Implement/verify existing AC loss predictions in NASA’s code
2. Assess NASA code to determine if approach is appropriate. Revise/develop equations in the code as needed
2. Higher fidelity AC loss prediction for 1 (or a small number) of specific designs. A finite element simulation of the motor that includes the rotor and stator, the stator’s small permeability, a model of the superconductor (e.g., H formulation), and other important parameters
1. Eventually, a transient simulation that includes eddy current losses in the normal metals is desired, but this SOW only includes a small number of quasi-static simulations that neglect eddy currents
3. Measurement of AC loss in stacks of 15-50+ HTS tapes that extends beyond what is available in the literature
1. Further investigate the saturation of loss suppression as number of tapes increases
2. Focus on narrower tapes and different field orientations
4. Measurement of AC loss due to self field in a racetrack HTS coil
