About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirement for a vacuum glove box for the In situ Carbon Evolution Experiments (ICEE) facility at Ames Research Center. The vacuum glove box is specifically needed to handle and store air-sensitive scientific samples from astrophysics, astrobiology, planetary science, and exobiology research, particularly samples that have been irradiated in an ultra-high vacuum chamber. The required glove box must be stainless steel, no larger than 52" x 27" x 28", include a transit box for sample transfer, have a vacuum control unit, an oilless vacuum pump, an internal power strip, and a steel stand with casters, all within a total cost not exceeding $11,932.13.

Market research revealed three vendor quotes, with Global Lab Supply being the only vendor within the project's budget at $11,932.13. The NASA point of contact is Dr. Andrew Mattioda, and the potential vendor contact is Karen A. Rodriguez from Global Lab Supply. The period of performance for this procurement is 4 months, with the glove box intended to preserve scientific samples under controlled conditions by maintaining negative pressure and minimizing the use of purge gases like argon or nitrogen.

Statement of Work for Vacuum Glove Box

Background:

The Vacuum Glove Box will be used to handle and store air sensitive samples, such as samples that have been irradiate samples (i.e. UV photolysis) inside the ICEE (In situ Carbon Evolution Experiments) facility UHV (ultra-high vacuum chamber), see https://www.nasa.gov/in-situ-carbon-evolution-experiments-icee/ or other air sensitive samples such as samples from sample return missions.

Astrophysics, Astrobiology, Planetary Science and Exobiology Work The ICEE UHV chamber is capable of irradiating samples under a wide variety of astrophysical and planetary science conditions (i.e., space weathering, electron, X-ray, UV). Such irradiation mimics the processes occurring in the ISM (interstellar medium), proto-planetary disks, or on planetary bodies (e.g., Europa and Encleadus). The irradiation creates radical species within the sample that are rapidly passivated or altered if or when the irradiated sample is exposed to the air, negating the usefulness of any subsequent sample analysis.

The vacuum glove box will help preserve samples under relevant astrophysical and planetary science conditions for additional analysis and study. A vacuum glove box keeps the samples under negative pressure, conserving the use of purge gases, such as argon or nitrogen, thus minimizing costs.

Scope and Specifications:

The Vacuum Glove Box will have the following:

1. The overall size of the vacuum glove box will be no greater than 52” L x 27” W x 28” D;

2. The vacuum glove box shall be made of stainless steel.

3. The vacuum glove box will have a transit box (transfer port), which can be separately purged and evacuated from the main box. This is to permit the transfer of samples from the room into the glove box.

4. The vacuum glove box shall have a door, permitting access to the interior of the glove box, for cleaning of the glove box and the installation/removal of large pieces of equipment.

5. The vacuum glove box shall have a vacuum control unit (115 V) that monitors the vacuum level and automatically controls vacuum pump operation by turning the vacuum pump off/on and opening/closing an in-line solenoid valve to maintain a preset vacuum level (to 29.5” Hg) in a remote vacuum chamber.

6. The vacuum glove box shall come with an oilless/oil free vacuum pump capable of 9.5 CFM and running on 115 VAC.

7. The vacuum glove box shall come with 3/8” ID tubing and clamps necessary to connect the glove box to the vacuum pump.

8. The vacuum glove box shall come with a 35” height steel stand on casters (two caster should be lockable).

9. The vacuum glove box shall come with an internal power strip, with at least four outlets 110V-60Hz, 15 amp.

10. Overall costs for the vacuum glovebox shall not exceed $11,932.13.

Period of Performance:

The period of performance shall be 4 months.
