About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the NASA Space Geodesy Project, detailing requirements for a target signature test laser. The SOW specifies the procurement of a pulsed laser with precise technical specifications, including a 532 nm wavelength, pulse duration less than 100 ps, repetition rate up to 2 kHz, and pulse energy between 100 nJ and 100 µJ. Additional requirements include air cooling, a compact 40x40 cm optical bench footprint, free-space output, and an M-squared measurement of less than 1.5.
The laser is intended for testing far-field diffraction patterns on retroreflector arrays to be mounted on satellites for precise range determination via ground stations. The contractor must deliver the laser to Goddard Space Flight Center within 10 weeks of award, accompanied by all applicable test data and manufacturer specification certifications. The project aims to measure the target signature of retroreflector arrays, which involves analyzing the signal pulse spreading caused by reflections from multiple retroreflector cubes.

Space Geodesy Project
TARGET SIGNATURE TEST LASER
STATEMENT OF WORK
April 2025
1. GENERAL
This contract is for the delivery of a laser suitable for performing target signature tests on retroreflector arrays.
The NASA Space Geodesy Project (SGP) maintains an optical laboratory for testing far-field diffraction patterns on retroreflector arrays. These arrays are to be mounted on satellites for precise range determination via ground stations equipped with lasers. SGP is looking to acquire a pulsed laser that would allow the measurement of a given array’s target signature. The target signature of an array is the ‘spreading’ of a return signal pulse, due to reflection from multiple retroreflector cubes.
2. LASER CHARACTERISTICS
The contractor shall deliver a laser with the following characteristics:
1. Any cooling must be by air (i.e. no water cooling, requiring a separate chiller)
2. A footprint on an optical bench of no more than 40x40 cm
3. Wavelength of 532 nm +/- 0.6 nm
4. Pulse duration of less than 100 ps
5. Repetition rate of single shot to at least 2 kHz, able to be triggered by external signal
6. Pulse energy of at least 100 nJ but less than 100 uJ
7. M-squared measurement of < 1.5
8. Free-space output (not fiber coupled)
3. DELIVERY TERMS
The contractor shall deliver the laser to Goddard Space Flight Center, with all applicable test data available and certification that it meets manufacturer specification, within 10 weeks of award.
