About this file

This Statement of Work details NASA Ames Research Center's requirement for two sets of two PIAA mirrors for their Ames Coronagraph Exoplanet (ACE) project, which advances technology for direct detection of exoplanets. The mirrors must be identical to those manufactured under contract 80NSSC19P0318, with slight variations in PIAA sag applied to each mirror surface.

The technical specifications require diamond-turned aluminum mirrors with protected aluminum coating, 15.3mm thickness, 25.4mm mechanical outer radius, and specific parameters for clear aperture, hole radius, and curvature. The mirrors must achieve <20nm RMS surface figure error with a 15nm RMS goal, >90% reflectivity at 650nm, and be mounted in a rigid support structure with 500.0mm separation between vertices. The work will be performed at NASA Ames Research Center with a 22-week lead time. Nu-TEK Precision Optical Corp is identified as the contractor, with the requirement to provide test reports and certificates of conformance verifying compliance with specifications.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Background The Ames Coronagraph Exoplanet (ACE) project is a high contrast imaging laboratory at NASA Ames devoted to advancing state of the art technology for the direct detection of exoplanets. NASA Ames developed the Phase-Induced Amplitude Apodization (PIAA)- Vortex Coronagraph technology which is a coronagraph that can recover the performance advantages of both PIAA throughput and high robustness for on-axis telescope pupil using Vector Vortex Coronagraph technology. The main goal is to design and demonstrate a coronagraph that will reach TRL-3-level proxies for monochromatic contrast and contrast stability with a centrally obstructed pupil in an in-air environment.

2. Objective/Requirements

To provide two sets of two mirrors for the PIAA Telescopes identical to those manufactured under 80NSSC19P0318, except that slight variations in PIAA sag will be applied to each mirror surface. Optomechanical builds and other specifications are expected to remain as they were previously built. As with the previous build, the vendor will use high precision line scan profilometry and System WFE data to show compliance with mirror form error requirements.

3. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs

The contracted vendor shall perform the following duties:

Provide two sets of two mirrors and mirror housings meeting the PI’s specifications for prescription:

PIAA Mirror 1 PIAA Mirror 2 Material Diamond turn

Aluminum Same

Coating Protected Al, alternative possible.

Nickel plating is ok.

Same

Thickness Target 15.3mm Same Mechanical Outer Radius

25.4 +/- 0.05 mm Same

Clear Aperture Radius 16.0 mm Same Inner Clear Ap. Radius 1.37 mm Same Hole Radius 1.24 +/- 0.02 mm Same Radius of Curvature -1000 +/- 0.5 mm Same Conic Constant -1 Same Surface Figure Error < 20 nm rms required, 15 nm rms goal Same

Reflectivity at 650 nm > 90% Same Back Surface Commercial polish, surface normal to parent optical axis to within 1 arcmin

Same

The two mirror surfaces are supported by a rigid support structure, a “tube.” The separation between the vertices of the primary and secondary conic section shapes is 500.0 mm +/- 0.1 mm. The tip-tilt and lateral positions of the two mirrors are constrained by the distance measured in each tangent plane between the vertex and the intersection of the opposite mirror’s optic axis with that plane, and is constrained to be < 0.1 mm.

Provide test reports and/or certificates of conformance (CoCs) verifying that mirrors meet prescriptions.

4. Place of Performance

NASA Ames Research Center, Building N245, Moffett Field, CA 94035.

5. Period of Performance Lead time on these materials is expected to be approximately 22 weeks (5-6 months).
