About this file

This document is a Statement of Work for the operation of two WeatherHive UAS swarm systems in support of the NASA WH2yMSIE Campaign. The work includes deployment, setup, operations, and timely data delivery to NASA.

The scope covers logistics, travel, setup, operations, data collection, data curation and quality assurance, and final data delivery within 60 days of the end of the WH2yMSIE campaign. The WeatherHive systems will be deployed at the Department of Energy Southern Great Plains site and over the ocean via partnership with Scripps Oceanography. GreenSight will manage the setup, operations, and data delivery, which includes preliminary data and "quicklooks" during the campaign, as well as final QA/QC'd datasets. The performance period covers October 21 - November 8, 2024.

STATEMENT OF WORK

For the operation of two WeatherHive UAS swarm systems in support of the NASA

WH2yMSIE Campaign including deployment, setup, operations, and timely data delivery

Background Through a partnership between NASA and NOAA, the Westcoast & Heartland Hyperspectral Microwave Sensor Intensive Experiment (WH2yMSIE; https://earth.gsfc.nasa.gov/climate/campaigns/WHyMSIE) will demonstrate the first-of-its-kind hyperspectral microwave airborne measurements (CoSMIR-H) and will be complemented by other passive (infrared, visible) and active (lidar) sensors onboard the NASA ER-2 aircraft. Serving as a future NASA planetary boundary-layer (PBL) mission prototype, WH2yMSIE aims to capture a wide variety of thermodynamic, moisture, and PBL regimes across a variety of surface types. A key aspect of any PBL mission will be a focus on the role of the land surface and land-atmosphere interactions on the retrieval of PBL properties, as well as the role of surface and vertical temperature, humidity, pressure, and winds as measured by ground measurement and atmospheric profiling networks. Through the WH2yMSIE campaign NASA is specifically interested in understanding how detailed, high spatio-temporal vertical tree-dimensional (3D) meteorological fields can be incorporated into PBL Mission science and data analyses. The WeatherHive system provides continuous vertical and spatial sampling of key meteorological data at each deployment location that is best suited for connecting with WH2yMSIE campaign data. Working together with GreenSight, WeatherHive UAS systems will be deployed at the Department of Energy Southern Great Plains (SGP) location and over ocean via partnership with Scripps Oceanography. GreenSight will deploy and operate the WeatherHive systems for WH2yMSIE including arranging site access, operations, data collection, and distribution to the WH2yMSIE team within 60 days of the end of the campaign.

Scope This work supports the operation of two GeenSight WeatherHive systems, including logistics, travel, setup, operations, data collection, data curation and QA/QC and final data delivery within 60 days of the end of the WH2yMSIE campaign. The exact deployment locations will be determined by GreenSight after site surveys and final approvals but will be generally located at the DOE ARM SGP site and either off the Scripps Institute for Oceanography research pier and/or off the coast of Catalina Island. GreenSight will also work directly with local site PoCs for access permissions and other logistics including internet and power, and a location for safe operations of UAS platforms. Working together with NASA to define sampling strategies (specific locations, vertical heights, spatial coverage, temporal cadence, etc), GreenSight will manage the setup/removal, operation, data collection and delivery. GreenSight will deliver preliminary data and “quicklooks” during the campaign and final QA/QC’ed datasets within 60 days of the end of the campaign via FTP or accessible data portal.

Requirements Operations of two WeatherHive UAS systems at each location for continuous monitoring during WH2yMSIE campaign overflights and during agreed-upon periods to capture background conditions.

Delivery of preliminary data and “quicklooks” during the campaign and final QA/QC’ed datasets within 60 days of the end of the campaign via FTP or accessible data portal.

Deliverables or Delivery Schedule Setup and operation of two WeatherHive UAS systems during the October 21-25th, October 28th- November 1st, and November 4th-November 8th, 2024 periods. This will include all logistical, site access, and other permitting to operate, data collection, and data delivery to NASA tasks. The deliverables are:

the operation of two WeatherHive systems; coordination with NASA on the scan and data collection modes; the operation of the HeatherHive systems; the delivery of the data to NASA in near real time and within 60 days of removal from the field.
