About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the Advanced Exploration Systems Life Support Systems Sole Source Acquisition of an Aluminum Wire Extruder. The SOW is for a NASA contract to provide an aluminum extruder capable of processing material separated from carbothermal slag and operating in a vacuum up to 1x10-6 Torr. The extruder will support NASA's Metal Extraction Lunar Technology from Carbothermal Reduction (MELT-CR) project, which studies aluminum extraction from carbothermal reduced slag. The key requirements are that the extruder must produce aluminum wire from the reduced slag, operate in a high vacuum, and provide operational steps or a user manual. This SOW is related to a sole source federal contract opportunity, Solicitation Number 80NSSC24877884Q, for the Purchase of Aluminum Extruder, issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center.

NASA Statement of Work

Advanced Exploration Systems Life Support Systems

Sole Source Acquisition of Aluminum Wire Extruder

16 May 2024

Project MELT-CR Working Group

George C. Marshall Space Flight Center Engineering Directorate, Space Systems Department

INTRODUCTION

The Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) team at Marshall Space Flight Center has partnered with EM22 to study potential in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) practices applicable to oxygen generation and life support systems. During this partnership, the hardware provided by ECLSS and ES62 has been utilized to study possible metal separation capabilities to support the Lunar surface need for aluminum separation and extraction.

Metal Extraction Lunar Technology from Carbothermal Reduction (MELT-CR) was funded at the turn of FY24 to study aluminum extraction from carbothermal reduced slag provided by Sierra Space. NASA is seeking a Company that has developed an aluminum extruder capable of meeting NASA’s needs for post-processing aluminum separated carbothermal slag in the vacuum furnace operated by NASA personnel.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The statement of work objectives described by The Company are as follows:

1. The Company shall provide an aluminum extruder capable of processing material separated from carbothermal slag.

Performance Requirements and Deliverables:

1. The Company shall produce an aluminum extruder that produces aluminum wire from reduced carbothermal slag or other feedstocks.

2. The Company shall produce an aluminum extruder that operates in a vacuum as high as 1x10-6 Torr.

3. The Company shall provide operational steps or user manual for the aluminum extruder provided to NASA.
