About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for an Air Cooled Chiller required to support the development and testing of electrical powertrain components for electrified aircraft at the Dsite test facility of NASA's Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, OH. The chiller must use Polyalphaolefin (PAO) as the recirculating coolant and meet specific performance requirements, including a cooling rating of 15,000 BTU/hr (4.4kW), temperature control range of +5 to +35°C, pump rating of 14 GPM at 60 PSI, and aircooled condenser with 32°C (90°F) ambient. The project has a procurement budget of $50,000 or less. The TekTemp Instruments TDK-200 chiller was identified as the only compatible option that meets the required specifications. NASA is soliciting this requirement under Solicitation Number 80NSSC24874633Q, with a required delivery of 10 weeks from award to the NASA Armstrong Test Facility.

Statement of Work

Air Cooled Chiller Background:

The D‐site test facility at NASA’s Armstrong Test Facility (ATF) in Sandusky, OH, is being renovated and re‐purposed to support the development and testing of novel electrical powertrain components for electrified aircraft. The test facility requires a Chiller to support performance testing of prototype batteries and other electronics for electric aircraft. Most chillers use water or a mixture of water and glycol as the recirculating fluid. Unique to this type of testing is the requirement for the chiller to use Polyalphaolefin (PAO) as the recirculating coolant. This activity is supported by Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project.

Requirements:

The following specifications for the Air‐cooled Chiller are the performance requirements that must meet the needs of the project:

Specification Value

Coolant Polyalphaolefin (PAO)

Chiller Cooling rating 15,000 BTU/hr (4.4kW) @ 20ºC

Temperature Control/Range +5 to +35°C

Pump Rating 14 GPM @ 60 PSI

Condenser cooling type/rating Air‐cooled / 32ºC (90ºF) ambient

Control Remote start/stop and Remote analog setpoint

Flow Data Coolant flowmeter with process variable retransmit

Backflow Prevention Backflow prevention valves

Signal Output User Specified

Input Power Required 208/230 VAC, 3 Phase

Procurement Budget:

Equipment purchases not to exceed $50,000 (including shipping)

Equipment Selection:

A market search was performed, and the Tek‐Temp Chillers were the only ones compatible with PAO that could achieve the flow rates the project requires. To support these test efforts, the EPFD project is requesting to purchase the following items:
