About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) that describes a requirement for a vertical tube vacuum furnace to support NASA's Metal Extraction Lunar Technology from Carbothermal Reduction (MELT-CR) project. The furnace must be capable of operating at temperatures up to 2000°C and maintaining a vacuum pressure of 1x10-5 Torr. The goal is to utilize the furnace to smelt carbothermal reduced slag and induce Marangoni-driven transport phenomena to extract aluminum.
The related federal contract opportunity is a sole source acquisition from Thoughtventions Unlimited LLC for the required vertical tube furnace. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is the procuring center, and the NAICS code is 334516. Interested parties may submit capabilities and qualifications by 3:00 PM CST on 6/4/2024, but the government will make the sole source determination at its discretion.

INTRODUCTION
The Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) team at Marshall Space
Flight Center has partnered with EM22 to study potential in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) practices applicable to oxygen generation and life support systems. During this partnership, the hardware provided by ECLSS and ES62 has been utilized to study possible metal separation capabilities to support the Lunar surface need for aluminum separation and extraction.
Metal Extraction Lunar Technology from Carbothermal Reduction (MELT-CR) was funded at the turn of FY24 to study aluminum extraction from carbothermal reduced slag provided by Sierra Space. The carbothermal reduced slag contains an increased concentration of alumina-silicates in which the increased silica content increases the melting point beyond the capability of the furnace previously used for JSC-1 a lunar regolith simulant.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Goals will be to:
1. Utilize this new furnace to be provided by vendor to smelt the carbothermal slag and induce the Marangoni-driven transport phenomena of the aluminum out of the smelt.
Performance Requirements and Deliverables:
1. Vendor shall provide a vertical tube vacuum furnace capable of operating at a temperature of2000°C and maintain a vacuum pressure of ::Slxl0-5 Torr without damaging the body of the furnace.
