About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the procurement of flight qualified microvalves by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for the Multifunctional Nanosensor Platform (MNP) instrument as part of the Polaris project.

Mindrum Precision, the sole provider of these flight qualified microvalves, will produce 4 total microvalves, valve manifolds, wiring, and assembly parts for the flight prototype. One valve will be delivered in May 2024, with the remaining 3 valves delivered by the end of September 2024. Mindrum Precision will also provide information for NASA to make and operate a control box for the valves. The microvalves must have a small mass of approximately 25g, a size of 1.7" in the longest dimension, be bidirectional latching valves, and be able to operate at lower pressures around 10-12 Torr with pressure differentials.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Mindrum Precision

April, 2024

Microvalve procurement

Background

NASA, GSFC is developing a flight prototype of the Multifunctional Nanosensor Platform (MNP) instrument as part of the Polaris project. One of the components we need is a flight qualified, miniaturized microvalve for sample inlet and outlet of the instrument. Mindrum Precision produces microvalves that have been used for flight mass spectrometers in various missions to Lunar and Martian environments. These valves have proven flight heritage and have been designed for such extraterrestrial environments that we plan to target.

Scope

Mindrum Precision will produce 4 total microvalves, valve manifolds, wiring, and assembly parts for our flight prototype. One valve with appropriate wiring and assembly parts will be produced and delivered in May with parts on hand. The remainder will be delivered by the end of the period (Sept 2024). Mindrum will also provide information for us to make/operate a control box for the valves.

Requirements

Each valve should have a small mass of ~ 25 g and size (1.7” in the longest dimension).

The valve should be bidirectional latching valves to minimize power draw. To actuate valves, a pulse of 4 A current at 18 – 28 VDC is required over ~ 7 ms timespan. The valves should be able to operate at lower pressures (~10-12 Torr) with pressure differentials of <200 psi (104 Torr). The valves should also have minimal leakage at the desired pressure differentials. We require that the valves operate at temperatures between -60 and 200 °C.

Deliverables:

1. 4 microvalves for flight prototype of Multifunctional Nanosensor Platform. 1 will be delivered by 5/30/2024 for initial integration and environmental testing, and 3 more will be delivered by 9/30/2024.

Period of Performance

• This will cover time period from Date of award to September

2024.
