About this file

This statement of work outlines requirements for exterior painting services at a 7-foot by 10-foot wind tunnel facility. The scope of work involves pressure washing, rust treatment, and repainting approximately 18,900 square feet of exterior walls, roofing, crawl spaces, beams and bracing at the northeast end of the wind tunnel complex located at NASA Ames Research Center. Services must be completed within 12 weeks and will utilize Intertuf 262 paint in Platinum Gray color. The related federal contract opportunity was solicited by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center as a special notice for these exterior painting services at the 7-foot by 10-foot wind tunnel operated by the U.S. Army Technology Development Directorate at NASA Ames Research Center.

7‐by10‐FootWindTunnel–ExteriorPaint

1. Background

The U. S. Army Technology Development Directorate (TDD) operates and maintains the 7-ft by 10-foot Wind Tunnel complex located at Ames Research Center. The Wind Tunnel complex includes the main wind tunnel building (N215), the hover chamber located in building N216A, and various other shop/prep/warehouse areas located in buildings N216, N216A, and N216B.

The Wind Tunnel (WT), attached to N215, is a closed circuit system in which air flows in a rectangular recirculating loop. The wind tunnel walls are supported by a steel exoskeleton structure with a few sections having flat steel panels on the exterior. Over time and with environmental factors such as sunlight and rain, exterior sections of the tunnel have become degraded with peeling and/or fading paint and rust.

2. Objective

The objective of this statement of work is to refurbish the exterior structure of the wind tunnel through rust abatement and painting. This is Phase 2 of 4 of a multi-year, multi-phase effort. Phase 1 was completed on the east end section of the wind tunnel in 2022.

This next phase 2 will focus on the north section (nearest to building N216A) as depicted in Figure 1.

3. Work Breakdown and Specifications

- Pressure wash and prepare wind tunnel surfaces and support structure of the northeast circuit of the wind tunnel (from northeast corner up to air exchanger). See Figure 1.

- Treat all visible rust (remove old paint, sand), as needed.

- Prime and repaint exterior surfaces and support structure.

- Table 1 provides approximate square footage of area to be repainted.

- Paint/primer Specification: Intertuf 262. Color: Platinum Gray (71046).
