About this file

This document is a statement of work for the purchase of six-axis load cells. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ames Research Center requires the purchase of four additional JR3 30E15A4-I40-EF-100L load cells to be used in wind tunnel testing of small-scale multirotor systems. The load cells will be paired with existing JR3 load cells already in use to maintain consistency. Each load cell will be supplied with sensor cable, external analog electronics, data cable, power cable, filter kit, and 120V power supply. The related federal contract opportunity is a special notice posted by NASA Shared Services Center seeking six-axis load cells.

Item Description JR3 Load Cells for MTB3

Background:

The Aeromechanics Office (Code AV) at NASA Ames routinely conducts testing of small-scale multirotor systems to accomplish the research tasks set by the RVLT (revolutionary vertical lift and technology) project. The MTB, Multirotor Test Bed, is a test stand that researches the performance and acoustics of various multirotor configurations. During the MTB1 and MTB2 wind tunnel tests, the MTB used Interface load cells. However, the next test, MTB3, plans to go to higher loading conditions which the current Interface load cells are not strong enough to withstand. Thus, stronger load cells are needed for the upcoming test. A previous wind tunnel test, the SBS (Side-by-Side), used 2 JR3 load cells. These load cells have the requirements necessary for the upcoming MTB3 test. It is desired that 4 additional JR3 load cells be purchased since 6 stronger load cells are needed for the test and we already have 2. This is less expensive than it would be to purchase 6 completely new load cells.

In order to mitigate inconsistencies between the rotors, it is essential that all load cells are the exact same make and model. This means the exact same make and model of the JR3 load cells used in the SBS tests must be purchased to maintain interchangeability between the existing load cells and the new load cells.

Additionally, using load cells that the test team is familiar with provides a risk reduction to the test. Since the team knows that these load cells perform well in the wind tunnel testing environment and know how to use the load cells and set them up on the model and with the data acquisition system, this reduces risk and time.

A separate sole-source justification is included with this Purchase Request as well as a quote from the vendor for the below hardware.
