About this file

This document is a statement of work from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for an 85 L vertical chamber autoclave. The statement of work requires providing MSFC with a fully functioning autoclave instrument that can sterilize liquids, solid instruments, and stainless steel tanks filled with liquids through liquid, dry, and solid instrument cycles. The autoclave must be able to sterilize a tank measuring 9 inches in diameter and 23 inches in height. Training, set-up, and operation assistance are also required deliverables. The associated federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 80NSSC23844674Q for an 85L vertical chamber 220V autoclave from LabSci. The requested autoclave must cost no more than $10,578.75 and meet all stated performance requirements in order to comply with the terms of this statement of work.

INTRODUCTION

The International Space Station Water Recovery System (WRS) achieves near total recovery of potable water via the combined processes of the Urine Processor Assembly (UPA) and the Water Processor Assembly (WPA). However, biofouling in a wastewater-holding tank at the start of the WPA process particularly in the form of biofilm formation can accumulate to a point of disrupting system operation by causing interruptions or blockages of flow within lines and valves surrounding the accumulated growth. A method of biofilm growth mitigation or prevention is necessary to avoid system interruption and hardware replacement that is costly in both crew time and resources.

The Biofilm Working Group at MSFC is developing methods and studying their efficiencies with complex microbial consortia and a wide range of biofilm sizes. To complete the trade study a large test stand with multiple bioreactors will be used. To achieve success the large inlet tanks must be sterilized. However, only few autoclaves carry the size requirements for the large tank, which must be sterile prior to use. Sterilization of tanks prevents environmental contamination of the test and creates a much-needed vacuum environment for the microbiota under study.

Image 1. ISS biofilm obtained from grounded hoses from SpX-21. Biofilms during ground testing are expected to be of the same shape and size.

Image 2. Test Stand tank that uses wastewater simulant. Tank must be autoclaved prior to use.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Goals will be to:

1. Provide MSFC with a fully working instrument, basic training, and set-up and operation assistance.

2. Provide MSFC with an instrument that complies with the performance requirements listed.

CATEGORIES AND ASSOCIATED COST

Table 1 - Cost breakdown per item based on quotation ref provided.

Item DESCRIPTION COST

85 L VERTICAL CHAMBER 220V w/ Shipping included in discounted price $ 10,578.75

$ 10578.75

Performance Requirements and Deliverables:

1. The instrument must be able to sterilize liquids, solid instruments, stainless steel tanks filled with liquids and have a separate dry cycle.

2. The instrument must have visual panels and buttons to track pressure and temperature as well as:

a. Operational manual

b. Barrel that fits a tank of diameter 9”, Height 23” as seen in https://www.mcmaster.com/9998N12/

c. If the tank cannot be autoclaved properly, as well as the water inside, the item does not comply with the SoW and requirements for purchase.

d. The autoclave must have a power cord that connects to a general wall power outlet.
