About this file
This statement of work outlines requirements for laser resistant cladding material. NASA requires the delivery of 212 panels of dimensions 4 feet by 8 feet and 26 panels of dimensions 4 feet by 12 feet made of a matte white material no more than 0.25 inches thick and 0.78 pounds per square foot to withstand a 3200 watt laser beam with a spot size of 3.5 inches by 5 inches and peak irradiance of 987 watts per square inch for 100 seconds from a distance of 4 feet. The material must be delivered to NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia by September 30, 2023. The related federal contract opportunity on the NASA Shared Services Center website is solicitation number 80NSSC23840484Q for laser resistant cladding material.

STATEMENT OF WORK
1. Objective/Requirements A laser heater is being added to the Integrated Structural Assembly of Advanced Composites (ISAAC) robotic system. This laser beam has a larger beam spot size than many lasers and is high enough power to cause injury or damage so the interior walls and ceiling of the ISAAC enclosure where the laser will be used must be covered with a barrier material that is laser resistant. This procurement is to purchase the cladding material.
2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs
• The barrier material must stop a LV6, 3200 W laser beam with spot size 3.5 inches by
5.0 inches projected to spot area of 175 in2 when concentrated on one location for 100 seconds at a distance of 4 ft from the source.
• The barrier material must stop a laser beam with a peak irradiance of 987 W/in2
• Note that this requirement is more severe than typical laser barrier testing so NASA performed testing (through a contract to the laser vendor) on several barrier material and has data to show what materials passed the tests and what did not.
• All panels must be matte white (6mm-LAMAL 2.25MBK)
• Panel weight is no more than 0.78 lb/square foot
• Panel thickness is no more than 0.25 in.
• 212 panels of dimensions 4 ft by 8 ft are required
• 26 panels of dimensions 4 ft by 12 ft are required
3. Place of Performance Deliver material to NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia
4. Period of Performance Delivery due by September 30, 2023.
