About this file

This document outlines a statement of work for a federal contract opportunity. The Marshall Space Flight Center is seeking a vendor to conduct surveys of optical reference markings attached to the Space Launch System vehicle while assembled on the Mobile Launcher at Kennedy Space Center. The vendor will be responsible for conducting survey measurements of the markings on the Artemis II booster segments in the Vehicle Assembly Building transfer aisle prior to stacking on the mobile launcher. Once the integrated vehicle is mated, the vendor will conduct additional surveys. The vendor must have experience with accurate and precise measurement techniques for large aerospace systems within accuracies of 0.03 to 0.10 inches from ranges of 30 to 300 feet. The selected vendor must provide all required equipment, coordinate activities with Space Launch System and Exploration Ground Systems personnel, follow all Kennedy Space Center safety requirements, and deliver initial and final survey reports on schedule. Access is required to several NASA facilities to support meetings and conduct survey work. The period of performance for task one is from January 2024 through September 2024.

Request for Shape Fidelity to support Artemis II Survey of SLS markings.

Purpose:

• The Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Space Launch Systems Office is seeking a vendor to conduct surveys of optical reference markings attached to the Space Launch System (SLS) vehicle while assembled on the Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) Mobile Launcher (ML) at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). The vendor will be responsible for the following tasks:

• Task 1: Conduct survey measurements for the optical reference markings of Artemis II LH and RH Booster Segments while in VAB Transfer Aisle.

The activities described herein require:

• Extensive experience developing and conducting accurate and precise measurement techniques for other large aerospace systems is required. Accuracies of 0.03-0.10 inches from a range of 30-300 feet are desired.

• The contractor shall provide all equipment, including computing resources, required to develop, test, and conduct the survey measurements and process the results.

• Coordination with SLS and EGS personnel is required to determine detailed schedules for setup, testing, and survey activities. Priorities for reference marking surveys will be determined by SLS. KSC VAB activities will be scheduled based on the launch processing flow as determined by EGS, and may occur at any time of day or day of the week.

• All KSC safety requirements shall be followed at all times; Hazardous zones within the VAB are defined in GSDO-SPEC-1184.

• Survey activities for the tasks will be conducted around other launch processing activity in the VAB and shall not require quiescent conditions.

• Initial results, including accuracy values, shall be provided to SLS within 3 days following each activity. A detailed survey report shall be provided within 14 days following the activity. Positional locations will be reported in the SLS or ML coordinate systems as defined in SLS-SPEC-048.

• SLS vehicle markings requiring survey are documented in SLS-SPEC-167 (OML markings on Core Stage, Booster, MSA) and CEV-T-029800 (external markings on ICPS and MSA), ground VPS markings/nests to relate to SLS or ML coordinate system (ref OMR S.INTG.IAS.0018). Task 1 occurs prior to the booster stacking on the ML-1. Task 2 occurs once the integrated vehicle is mated prior to rollout.

• Access to Redstone Arsenal, Marshall Space Flight Center, Michoud Assembly Facility, and Kennedy Space Center is required to support technical and programmatic meetings and to conduct setup, testing, and survey activities.

Period of Performance:
