Modification Statement of Work:

Development of Spike Ejector Technology Aerodynamics Testing of a Computationally Optimized Ejector

Purpose: Engineers at NASA Stennis Space Center are investigating the adaptation of SSC’s spike diffuser technology to mass ejection systems.

Scope: This project will make use of an existing mass ejector testbed in place at Purdue University to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of a small NASA-supplied test article.

A NASA-owned 500-litre vacuum chamber already at Purdue will also be used for evacuation measurements.

The test article interfaces will be designed to match the current testbed configuration.

However, the contractor will be responsible for any minor modifications needed to accommodate alignment and articulation of the test article. The contract will further be responsible for all other efforts necessary to execute air ejector testing. This includes propellant acquisition and humidity control, test stand operation, exhaust management, etc. Instrumentation sufficient to measure system mass flows, thermodynamic states, and aerodynamic test article performance will be required. The contractor shall be prepared to supply steady feeds of steam and dry air to the ejector test article interfaces at specified conditions. The contractor will also need to supply cooling water to the steam generator combustion chamber.

Summary of Expected Testing: Based on the cadence of prior test series using the mass ejector rig, the equivalent of three full weeks of testing will be required to fully evaluate the aerodynamic performance of the new ejector.

Requirements:

Interface pressure setpoint range : 0.3-1.7 MPa Maximum allowable deviation from setpoint : ± 2.5 % Interface temperature setpoint range : 300-500 K Maximum allowable deviation from setpoint : ± 5 K Maximum flow rate : 2.0 kg/s Minimum test duration capability : 60.0 s Maximum back pressure on test article : 0.11 MPa Minimum number of ejector test article sensors : 8 Minimum data sample rate : 100 Hz Data file format : comma-separated values (CSV)

Deliverables:

- Aerodynamics test data, including a comprehensive test matrix.

- Comprehensive final report summarizing all test-related activities.

- Return of all government-owned hardware to NASA SSC.

Work Location: Contractor Facilities

Performance Period: Date of award – March 15, 2024

Deliverables Schedule: The contractor shall provide a brief formal status update on a monthly basis, with informal discussions to be held as needed. Aerodynamics testing shall be conducted before or during December 2023. A final report shall be delivered detailing all tests conducted including flow process and instrumentation diagrams. The contractor is responsible for packaging, insuring, and shipping all government-owned hardware to Stennis upon completion of testing.

Quality Assurance: The Contract Administrator and government reserve the right to inspect all work at all times during and upon completion of fabrication and to witness any or all tests. The contractor shall cooperate fully to enable the COR or government designated representative to be present at the performance of any or all tests and any other activity as specifically requested. The contractor shall furnish all equipment and materials for all tests except where stated otherwise. The contractor shall notify the COR one month prior to performance of any and all tests.
