About this file
This statement of work outlines requirements for a 3D scanner to support analysis of samples collected by the OSIRIS-REx mission. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration requires a Polyga Compact c506 3D scanner with FlexScan3D software to enable determination of densities for different particle types in the OSIRIS-REx sample collection. Testing has shown this scanner can perform scans through glovebox window glass to analyze samples while maintaining cleanroom protocols. The scanner is needed by June 15, 2023 to allow the curation team time to develop skills in combining scans into 3D volumes before the arrival of the OSIRIS-REx sample in late September 2023. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 80NSSC23836394Q for the Polyga Compact C506 scanner, travel case, and tripod to support analysis at NASA's Johnson Space Center for the OSIRIS-REx mission.

3D scanner for OSIRIS-REx Preliminary Examination and Collection Catalog Development
Statement of Work Brand Name Justification for Procurement of Polyga Compact c506 with
FlexScan3D Software
OSIRIS-REx samples may vary greatly in density based on separate geologic histories. It will be useful for the mission science team and subsequently the broader scientific community to have density information in the collection catalog about different OSIRIS-REx particles to help distinguish between different sample types. This 3D scanner has been tested at University of Arizona and works through glovebox window glass, which will facilitate determination of 3D volumes for particles while keeping them curation pristine. The volume determined using this scanner will be used to divide the sample weights to determine densities for OSIRIS-REx particles.
The JSC needs its own scanner to permanently keep in the OSIRIS-REx curation to minimize contamination related to the scanner leaving and re-entering the cleanroom. In addition, determination of density on newly processed particles is anticipated to be a long-term need for the collection. Finally, this scanner is needed by June 15, 2023 to enable the OSIRIS-REx curation processing team to develop their skills combining scans into a 3D volume, which is somewhat of art that requires practice to be ready for arrival of the OSIRIS-REx sample in late September 2023.
