About this file
This document outlines requirements for thermal vacuum chamber (TVAC) testing of NASA's Dragonfly Entry Aerosciences Measurements (DrEAM) Do No Harm (DNH) test articles. The testing must be conducted in accordance with the specifications provided, including temperature profiles for operational and survival cycling between -150°C and 135°C at a pressure of 10-4 Torr or lower. Deliverables include test logs, raw and plotted data, and a test summary report. The testing encompasses seven operational cycles and one survival cycle on seven DNH test articles incorporating various sensor types, with performance checks required during temperature plateaus. Red and yellow temperature alerts are defined, and proper procedures are specified in the event an alert point is reached.

DrEAM Do No Harm (DNH) TVAC Test Specification NASA Ames POC: Ruth Miller, ruth.miller@nasa.gov
1. TEST OBJECTIVE
Perform thermal vacuum (TVAC) cycling testing on NASA’s Dragonfly Entry Aerosciences Measurements (DrEAM) Do No Harm (DNH) test articles.
2. DELIVERABLES
The test facility shall provide the following items in electronic form as deliverables within 2 business days of test completion, except for the test summary report which shall be submitted within 15 business days (excluding holidays):
1. As-run test log in pdf format
2. Raw test data in text file, .csv, or Excel file format
a. Test article and chamber environmental data
3. Plots of data in pdf format
4. Test summary report in pdf format
a. Test set up descriptions and photos
b. Instrumentation and equipment list including calibration information
c. Testing environmental data plot
d. Photos of test articles before and after testing (if customer cameras are not allowed)
3. TVAC TEST REQUIREMENTS
The TVAC cycling testing shall consist of the profile detailed in Table 1 and depicted graphically in Figure 1.
The following requirements shall be met during TVAC testing:
1. All test articles shall be tested at the same time.
2. The soak time shall begin when thermocouple readings from all test articles fall within the specified temperature range. The test PI or DrEAM project representative will specify which thermocouples shall be monitored to meet this requirement.
3. Testing shall be performed at ≤ 10-4 Torr and shall have an adequate conduction path to ensure proper cycling.
4. Temperature control systems shall maintain the temperature at the component temperature sensor to within ±4°C during the test
5. Transitions between temperature extremes shall be at a minimum rate of 1°C per minute and a maximum rate of 5°C per minute.
a. The profile shown in Figure 1 assumes a ramp rate of 2°C per minute.
6. During pump down, it shall be demonstrated that components generate no corona that degrades their performance
7. Thermal cycle testing shall include at least seven (7) operational cycles and one (1) survival cycle.
8. The soak periods at each temperature plateau shall be at least four (4) hours.
9. Performance or functional tests shall be conducted during at least one hot soak and at least one cold soak
10. The test sequence shall include at least one (1) hot start and one (1) cold start test
11. Cold turn-on shall occur at the end of survival cold plateau
12. Components should be turned off during the high and low dwells until the temperature stabilizes, for at least 30 minutes, and then turned back on.
a. “Dwell” is defined as time at plateau temperature to allow unit internal temperatures to equilibrate and “Soak” as the total time at plateau temperature
13. Care should be taken when returning the chamber to ambient to ensure that no condensation forms on the test items.
14. If possible, the profile should be completed with the TVAC chamber in continuous operation.
15. Data shall be recorded from the test articles in real-time during the entire duration of the test. Thermocouple grade extension wire is preferred when making the TC connections to the
DAS.
16. Test article and chamber environmental data shall be recorded at a rate of one sample per every 10 seconds or faster.
Yellow and red alerts shall be implemented to prevent hardware from reaching temperature limits.
The yellow and red limits are:
Red Low: -160°C Yellow Low: -155°C Yellow High: 140°C Red High: 145°C
If a yellow limit is reached, the test PI or DrEAM project representative shall be notified immediately.
The test PI or DrEAM project representative shall take notes in the as-run procedure and monitor the situation to assess whether or not action should be taken in order to avoid reaching the red limit.
If a red limit is reached, the TVAC chamber shall automatically shut down and be brought to ambient.
The test shall be paused in a safe and stable state. The test PI or DrEAM project representative shall be notified immediately and shall take notes in the as-run procedure. A NASA Ames Problem Reporting and Corrective Action (PRACA) statement shall be written, and a Material Review Board (MRB) shall be convened to determine the appropriate corrective action to be taken. Trouble shooting or testing shall not resume until the MRB has approved an initial disposition or until the PRACA has been designated as minor.
Test article visual and functional checks are required before and after TVAC testing. The customer (test PI or DrEAM project representative) will perform these checks.

4. TEST ARTICLES
As detailed in Table 2, there are 7 DNH test articles: 2 of the DNH test articles consist of a “blank” 12” x 12” piece of SLA-561V and 5 of the DNH test articles include a sensor subsystem embedded in the center of a 12” x 12” piece of SLA-561V as shown in Figure 2. Table 3 details the sensor types, min signal, max signal, excitation voltage, and excitation current requirements for each sensor in the subsystems listed in Table 2. Table 4 lists the total quantity of each sensor type that is included in this TVAC test.
