Statement of Work For melting of NiTiHfZr large size ingot
Customer: NASA Glenn Research Center – Shape Memory Alloy Group
Prior Experience:
Contractor must have prior experience in producing NiTi based shape memory alloys and must be able to produce a ~90lb ingot of the target alloy using the required melting method and with the required impurity levels.
Composition
Final Target Composition of Ingot:
50.3Ni-29.7Ti-5Hf-15Zr (at%)
44.497Ni-21.427Ti-13.451Hf-20.624Zr (wt%)
If potential company does not have compositional adjustment factors for melting:
Charge Composition should be as listed below, in order to have a high chance of successfully meeting the target ingot composition:
50.4Ni-29.6Ti-5Hf-15Zr (at%)
44.578% Ni, 21.352% Ti, 13.449% Hf, 20.621% Zr (wt%)
Target Ingot Weight
90 lb
Impurity Levels:
Carbon < 0.015 wt%, Oxygen < 0.03 wt%
Melting Method:
Ingot must be produced via double melt Plasma Arc Melting (PAM/PAM) or Plasma Arc Melting followed by Vacuum Arc Remelting (PAM/VAR) with a final ingot diameter out of the second melt of not more than 6 inches.
Ingot Heat Treat – Not required on quote – can be performed separately:
Homogenize 1050C/72hr in vacuum > 10E-5 Torr in a carbon free furnace (no graphite elements or insulation).
