STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW)
1. Objective/Requirements
The objectives of this course are to:
Build an understanding of how bolted joints behave and how they fail Impart effective processes, methods, and standards for design and analysis, drawing on a mix of theory, empirical data, and practical experience Share guidelines, rules of thumb, and valuable references Assist the target audience in the enhanced understanding of widely used NASA-STD-
5020A.
Target Audience: Mechanical design engineers, structural analysts, and others interested in or involved with bolted joints as applied to NASA’s mission and current/future customer requirements.
2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs
Scope and Course Overview:
Most everyone involved in developing hardware for space missions (or any other purpose, for that matter) has been affected by problems with joints using threaded fasteners. Common problems include rupture under a single application of load, fatigue, detrimental yielding, joint slip, galling, inadequate preload, loss of preload, hardware falling out completely, low or nonlinear stiffness, excessive weight, procurement cost and lead time, incompatibility with the space environment, and time-consuming assembly and disassembly. This course will address these aspects of the application of bolted joint design as applied to current efforts and historical activities.
Includes an in depth look and application to NASA-STD-5020, "Requirements for Threaded Fastening Systems in Spaceflight Hardware," released in March 2012 for use throughout
NASA.
This 3-day course includes many examples and class problems.
3. Place of Performance
Format of the course will be virtual/on-line (most likely using Teams).
4. Period of Performance April 4-6, 2023
