Statement of Work
REQUESTING ORGANIZATION: NASA Engineering & Safety Center (NESC)
TITLE: Andrew Chaikin’s “Principles of Success in Spaceflight” Training Class
INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND:
The NASA Engineering and Safety Center is requesting support from Mr. Andrew Chaikin, Author, Speaker, and Space Historian, to present a 2 half-day training course titled “Principles of Success in Spaceflight” virtually to each NASA Center as specified below under “Description of Tasks to be Performed”.
The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) is an independent organization focused on engineering excellence. The objective of the NESC is to improve safety by performing in-depth independent engineering assessments, testing, and analysis to uncover technical vulnerabilities and to determine appropriate preventative and corrective actions for problems, trends, or issues within NASA's programs, projects, and institutions. The NESC draws upon the best engineering expertise from across the Agency and includes partnerships with other government agencies, national laboratories, universities, and industry. By drawing on the minds of leading engineers across the country, NESC consistently optimizes its processes, deepens its knowledge base, strengthens its technical capabilities, and broadens its perspectives, thereby further executing its commitment to engineering excellence.
DESCRIPTION OF TASKS TO BE PERFORMED:
“Principles of Success in Spaceflight” offers a clear and compelling exploration of success and failure through the lens of NASA's own history, which holds the crucial lessons we must learn and understand to be successful. The emphasis is on modes of thinking and behaviors that enhance success or lead us down the slippery slope toward failure, illustrated by detailed examples from past programs. Participants will understand why veteran project managers often say, “It’s not the technical stuff that gets you; it’s the people stuff.” Participants will explore key success behaviors such as “systems thinking,” “painstaking attention to detail,” “what-if thinking,” and many others. Special emphasis will be placed on the Apollo program that sent the first humans to the moon from 1968 to 1972. Apollo was as close to a “perfect” program as NASA has ever had, and its lessons illuminate not only principles of success, but also, what has happened in later spaceflight efforts including the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. Each of these programs will be discussed during the course, with analyses of the principles of success and failures that shaped the programs’ outcomes.
The Contractor shall perform the following:
(1) The contractor shall deliver the content of the “Principles of Success in Spaceflight” training course virtually for twelve centers. The course will consist of 2 half-day sessions
(2) The contractor shall coordinate all training dates with Ben Jimenea, NESC Integration Office.
(3) The Contractor shall provide 2 half-day training courses to up to 30 NASA employees along with a full copy of all course materials (downloadable PDF file) to each attendee. The attendees will be determined by the Engineering organizations at each NASA Center or facility.
GOVERNMENT FURNISHED ITEMS:
(1) The Government will provide adequate facility/conference room space to hold each training session.
(2) The Government will provide IT equipment needed for each training session.
(3) The Government will provide access to each NASA Center.
DELIVERABLES:
(1) Provide full copies of course materials to the NASA attendees.
(2) Provide monthly progress telecons to the NESC Technical Monitor.
(3) Provide one copy of all course materials to the NESC Technical Monitor.
PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE
Date of award through December 31, 2023.
