Design of Battery for the LEMS Investigation – 6/15/2020
PR: _____________________
Note: Only use the sections that are applicable to your service procurement.
Background Ibeos is a leading company for the design and fabrication of space-qualified batteries. A 1000 Whr battery from Ibeos is baselined to power the avionics and payload of the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station (LEMS). LEMS is self-sustaining autonomous lunar station that is being developed under funding from the DALI program. The estimated cost of the procurement is $112,000 and the estimated delivery date is 6 months after the orders is placed.
Scope The contractor shall design a 1000Whr BOL Energy, 28V nominal battery capable of supporting the 52 chrage/decharge cycle that corresponds to the nominal 2-years duration of LEMS operations.
Requirements
The Battery should obey to the following technical specifications:
o 1000Whr BOL Energy, 28V nominal o Supports discharge/charge up to ~1kW o Supports peak power around 60W o 8S8P configuration, 20V to 33.6V maximum voltage range o Supports LEMS 2-year duration, 52 DoD cycles o Estimated Peak DoD 73% is 25C capacity, will be somewhat deeper with mission profile o Operational Temperature range from 0 to 40C o Can support low current operations with wider temperature range of -25C to +45C o Volume: 16" x 5.975" x 3.3“ o Connector will exit on 5.975 x 3.3” face o Will minimize 5.975 and 3.3 dimensions to the extent practical; can grow
16” dimension if necessary o <7.5 kg mass
Deliverables or Delivery Schedule
The contractor shall support technical interchange discussions with LEMS on an as-needed basis.
The contractor shall provide support for a kickoff/system requirements review, held over teleconference or in Reston, VA. The review shall be held no later than 2 weeks after the order is placed.
The contractor shall provide support for a preliminary design review, held over teleconference or in Reston, VA no later than 2 months after the order is placed.
The contractor shall and deliver an Interface Control Drawing (ICD) specifying the battery Interfaces no later than 2 months after the order is placed.
The contractor shall deliver a STEP File of the battery mechanical envelope no later than 2 months after the order is placed.
The contractor shall deliver a cycle test report summarizing the results of the battery cell testing with mission temperature and charge/discharge rates based on the LEMS mission profile. The report shall be provided no later than 6 months after the order is placed.
Place of Performance Work shall be done at the contractor site in Reston, VA
Period of Performance 6 months from the time of the contract initiation.
