About this file

This is a Sources Sought Notice for the Army Research Laboratory seeking one (1) energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) system to be integrated with an existing Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). The detailed requirements specify the EDS system must be fully compatible with an FEI Quanta200 FEG microscope, using XTmicroscope Server and Microsoft Windows XP, and include a Silicon Drift Detector with specific technical capabilities such as high-resolution, low-energy X-ray detection, carbon resolution of ≤46 electron Volts, and the ability to perform live EDS imaging and simultaneous acquisition of electron images and X-ray maps.

The Sources Sought Notice is targeted at small businesses, including HUBZone, 8(a), Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned, Women-Owned, and Economically Disadvantaged Women-Owned Small Businesses. Interested parties must submit detailed responses within five business days of posting, including line-by-line specification compliance, market research pricing estimates, CAGE/UEID codes, business classification, manufacturing information, and past performance documentation. The contract is for the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Maryland, with an estimated delivery timeframe of no later than fourteen weeks after contract award, using NAICS code 334516 with a small business size standard of 1,000 employees.

Technical Point of Contact (TPOC)

In an effort to conduct research in the Bio-Materials Synthesis and Assembly Branch, the Biological & Biotechnology Sciences Division within Army Research Laboratory (ARL) requires quantity one (1) energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) system to be integrated with an existing Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). The Contractor shall provide the EDS to meet the following specifications.

1. System Compatibility & Installation

· The EDS system shall be fully operational and compatible with the existing FESEM: FEI Quanta200 FEG (field emission gun).

· The FESEM is currently operated using XTmicroscope Server and Microsoft Windows XP. The EDS system must maintain compatibility with this existing software and operating system environment.

· The EDS system software shall be installed on a dedicated, standalone computer and shall be capable of reliable communication with the XTmicroscope Server and the Microsoft Windows XP installation on the FESEM control computer.

2. Detector Specifications

· Detector Type: The detector shall be a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD).

· Sensor Area: The detector sensor area shall be 100 millimeters squared (mm²) or greater.

· Resolution: The detector shall be capable of high-resolution, low-energy X-ray detection, specifically for light element analysis. Carbon resolution shall be less than or equal to 46 electron Volts (eV) with a count rate of 50,000 counts per second (cps).

3. Functional Requirements

· Live EDS Imaging: The system shall support live EDS imaging capabilities.

· Simultaneous Acquisition: The system shall be capable of simultaneously acquiring live electron images, X-ray maps, and spectra from the same region of interest on the specimen.

· Image Overlay: The system shall allow for the overlay of live X-ray maps onto the live electron image.

· Quantitative Analysis Speed: The system shall be capable of high-resolution quantitative analysis at mapping speeds ≥ 400,000 output characters cps.

The Contractor shall deliver the one (1) energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) system freight on board (FOB) Destination to The Army Research Laboratory Center, Adelphi Maryland 20783.
