About this file
The document is a Salient Characteristics Sheet for a Plasma Corrosion Mitigation System, issued by the Department of the Air Force Global Strike Command under Solicitation Number FA462625Q0040. The system is a non-thermal, atmospheric pressure plasma technology designed for surface treatment and preparation across multiple material types, including metals, polymers, and composites. Key characteristics include removing organic contaminants, activating surfaces for improved adhesion, and performing coating and oxide removal without using solvents or abrasive media.
The system offers several strategic advantages, including environmental friendliness, precision surface treatment, portability for field use, and compliance with safety standards like OSHA, NFPA, and MIL-STD. It features an intuitive interface, requires minimal operator training, and uses only industrial atmospheric air as a consumable, resulting in low operating costs. The technology is particularly suited for applications in shipyards, depots, and flightlines, with capabilities to prepare surfaces for bonding, painting, welding, and coating while maintaining substrate integrity and providing a repeatable, certifiable surface preparation process.

Salient Characteristics: Plasma Corrosion Mitigation System
1. Surface Treatment Mechanism
· Utilizes atmospheric pressure, non-thermal plasma to modify surface properties.
· Capable of removing organic contaminants (e.g., oils, greases, paints) and activating surfaces for improved adhesion.
2. Non-Thermal / Low-Heat Input
· Employs non-thermal or low-temperature plasma processes to avoid thermal damage to underlying substrates.
3. Material Compatibility
· Suitable for use on a broad range of materials including metals (steel, aluminum, titanium), polymers, and composites.
· Does not degrade substrates or leave residues.
4. Coating and Oxide Removal
· Capable of removing light oxides, coatings (e.g., primers, sealants, light paints), and corrosion products.
· Effective for prebonding or pre-welding applications.
5. Surface Activation
· Modifies surface energy to improve bonding, painting, welding, or coating adhesion.
· Achieves a uniform treatment area.
6. Dry, Chemical-Free Process
· No need for solvents, acids, or abrasive media.
· Environmentally friendly and compliant with green manufacturing directives.
7. Precision and Controllability
· Process parameters (e.g., power, gas flow) set for consistent treatment across variable geometries.
· Localized treatment is possible with minimal over treatment.
8. Portability and Integration
· Portable or handheld units available for field use (e.g., shipyards, depots, flightlines).
9. Safety and Compliance
· Equipped with built-in safety interlocks and meets relevant OSHA, NFPA, and MIL-STD safety standards.
10. Ease of Operation
· Intuitive interface with user selectable menu for multiple users.
· Minimal operator training required.
11. Repeatability and Documentation
· Provides repeatable and certifiable surface preparation process.
· Training and user manual provided.
12. Minimal Consumables
· Requires only industrial atmospheric air, no blasting media or fluids/chemicals.
· Low operating cost.
