About this file

This document is a specification sheet for a Mobile Breathing Air Compressor Trailer to be procured by the Travis Air Force Base Fire Department.

The trailer is a self-contained, towable unit designed to provide clean, safe breathing air for refilling Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) cylinders used by firefighters during emergency operations, training, extended incidents, and special operations. The system must be manufactured in compliance with National Trailer Manufacturers Association (NATM) guidelines and NFPA 1901 2016 edition standards. Key specifications include a diesel/electric dual drive system (27 HP diesel at 20 kW; 20 HP electric at 15 kW) with automatic belt tensioning, two ASME air storage cylinders with bulk fill pneumatic logic, hydraulic surge brakes with breakaway actuator, and a formed structural steel frame built by BAUER. The unit must feature high gloss powder coat paint, CSPE synthetic rubber cover protection for operational panels, a telescoping light mast with four 500-watt fixtures, a snorkel tube for compressor air inlet, and a 7.5 kW belt-driven auxiliary generator. An electronic moisture-monitoring system must continuously monitor purification cartridge conditions and alert operators when saturation is approaching, ensuring the compressor produces air meeting NFPA and OSHA standards. The trailer must not exceed 5,500 pounds and dimensions of 183"L x 95"W x 105"H, be towable by approved department vehicles, and accommodate SCBA or SCUBA cylinders up to 31" in length. The contractor must deliver the completed unit to Travis Air Force Base Fire Department within 90-120 days, including freight to the customer facility, system start-up, and orientation training provided by a factory-certified technician.

Mobile Breathing Air Compressor Trailer

Purpose of Use

The mobile breathing air compressor trailer is designed to support fire and emergency operations by providing a safe, reliable source of clean breathing air. Its primary purpose is to refill Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) cylinders used by firefighters during emergencies, training, extended incidents, and special operations. The trailer allows air refilling to occur on scene or at remote locations without reliance on fixed facilities, improving response readiness, operational efficiency, and firefighter safety.

General Description

The system is a self-contained, trailer-mounted unit that produces, stores, and dispenses high-pressure breathing air. It includes an air compressor, storage cylinders, monitoring equipment, and power systems, all integrated onto a towable trailer. The unit is designed for mobile use and can operate independently or connect to shore power when available.
