Salient Characteristics
Commercial Availability Certification:
I have evaluated the commercial marketplace and determined that all of the salient characteristics documented below are available in products/services offered in the commercial marketplace.
Technical Requirements for a new Hall Effect and Seebeck Coefficient Measurement System
Hall Effect and Seebeck Coefficient Measurement System:
1. The Hall effect and Seebeck coefficient measurement system shall collect Hall effect properties of materials including carrier mobility, carrier concentration, and electrical resistivity as a function of temperature that ranges from 80 Kelvin (K) to as high as 500 K. The Seebeck coefficient measurement system shall collect Seebeck coefficient data (also called thermopower) from 80 K to as high as 500 K.
2. The Hall effect system shall be supplied with two types of magnets for data collection:
a. A “C-frame” electromagnet with an adjustable distance between poles that can produce a magnetic field range that covers negative (-)1.4 Tesla to positive (+)1.4 Tesla, and
b. A permanent magnet that produces up to 1.0 Tesla, but that can be rotated by 360 degrees on it’s stage around the sample to explore rotational magnetic field data.
3. The electromagnet shall be supplied with a Bipolar Magnet Power Supply to generate plus or minus (+/-) 1.4 Tesla and operate with 115 volt (V)/60 hertz (Hz) power input, and also a re-circulating water chiller that the vendor has chosen to provide sufficient cooling for the electromagnet during all modes of operation, and also operates from 115V/60 Hz power input.
4. The Hall effect and Seebeck coefficient system shall be supplied with a cryostat unit that can be cooled with liquid nitrogen using an integrated dewar system that has a capacity of no less than 0.4 liters of liquid nitrogen, and is supplied with a funnel for filling the dewar with liquid nitrogen. The cryostat shall be capable of connecting to a vacuum pump so that the sample may be in vacuum during measurement procedures. Army Research Laborotory (ARL) will supply the vacuum pump separately, but the vendor shall supply a vacuum accessory package including a foreline trap, vacuum gauge and electronics, vacuum stainless steel tubing, and connectors required to connect to the vacuum system (115V, 60Hz).
5. The Hall effect measurement system shall be supplied with a mechanical “clip” system that enables electrical contact to the sample using independent metal clips without soldering processes. The number of clip connection points shall be four and there shall be two separate electrical conduits for other special electrical measurements, such as electrostatic gating measurements. The position of the clips can be moved to accommodate samples of varying size, but samples having roughly 0.5 centimeter (cm) square to 1.2 cm square should be feasible.
6. The Seebeck coefficient measurement part if the system shall include Seebeck control Electronics and Cables; Seebeck Software Module; a separate Seebeck Vacuum Chamber with Low o/High Impedance Pre-Amplifier Installed; a set of four (4) Pre-Amplifier Boards for low/ high Impedance; a vendor-designed Seebeck Sample Mounting Test Fixture; a set of three Kapton Sample Mounting Stages – rated to 400,000 three (3) – a set of three ceramic sample mounting stages - rated to 730,000; and constantan wires of various diameters.
7. A set of four (4) High Impedance Seebeck Preamplifier board assemblies.
8. The vendor shall supply a sample mounting kit that they have designed for use with their Hall System.
9. The system shall be delivered complete with a control computer using Microsoft Windows 10, special control software, and all electrical interfaces that enable temperature control, experimental parameter control (e.g., magnitude of electrical current, magnitude of magnetic field, etc.) and data collection into a format suitable for making graphical representations. The control computer and associated electronics shall be housed in/with a vendor-supplied 19-inch ventilated rack that measures 600 millimeter (mm) deep, has enough electrical outlets to operate the system (115V/15 amp (A)) without any additional user-supplied electrical outlets.
