About this file
This document is a Sources Sought notice for a free fall penetrometer. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting market research to determine the availability of qualified businesses capable of providing a free fall penetrometer that meets the salient characteristics outlined in the attachment.
The free fall penetrometer must be capable of reaching water depths of 250-300 meters, penetrating sand lenses and consolidated mud layers, and taking accurate measurements of rheological properties with high spatial resolution. The instrument must acquire data via accelerometers, inclinometers, and pressure sensors, and have sufficient battery capacity to last through a standard field day of surveying. The supplier must provide the free fall cone penetrometer plus all associated equipment necessary for operation and deployment, and deliver the instrument within 6-8 weeks after receipt of order. Responses to this sources sought notice must be submitted via email by August 7, 2024. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code 334519 Other Measuring and Controlling Device Manufacturing applies to this requirement.

Salient Characteristics Free fall penetrometer
The Free fall penetrometer must meet all specified requirements and performance specifications.
Performance:
· Must be capable of reaching water depths of 250-300 meters and be able to penetrate sand lenses and consolidated mud layers found in lake and seafloors.
· Must be capable of penetrating subsurface deeper than 80 cm.
· Must take accurate measurements of rheological properties, including static undrained shear strength, with high spatial resolution (sample rate of at least 5kHz) through at least ~1 meter of sediment at water depths of 250+ meters.
· Include measurements of acceleration and velocity, dynamic cone resistance, and penetration depth.
Data Acquisition & Storage:
· The instrument must acquire data via accelerometers, inclinometers, and pressure sensors.
· The instrument must have battery capacity to last through a standard field day of surveying (8 hrs).
· The data collected must be stored in an easily accessible location and format.
Additional Information:
· The supplier must provide a free fall cone penetrometer plus all associated equipment necessary for the
· operation and deployment of the instrument.
· The instrument should be delivered within 6-8 weeks after receipt of order (ARO).
Delivery Address:
