About this file

This document is a salient characteristics specification for a laboratory animal bedding dispenser system intended for research facilities operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration Veterans Integrated Service Network 4. The specification outlines the functional and operational requirements for an automated bedding dispensing system designed to improve efficiency and standardization in animal care operations within VA research laboratories.

The dispenser system must be capable of automatically dispensing bedding material into animal housing units with controlled volume and frequency settings to accommodate various cage sizes and animal types. Key operational characteristics include adjustable dispensing intervals, compatibility with standard laboratory bedding materials, ease of cleaning and maintenance, and integration capabilities with existing laboratory management systems. The system should feature safety mechanisms to prevent material jamming, dust control features to maintain air quality in animal facilities, and user-friendly controls for laboratory personnel. Additional requirements address noise levels to minimize stress on research animals, material capacity specifications, and documentation capabilities for tracking bedding changes and maintenance schedules. The equipment must comply with applicable animal care standards and facility safety regulations relevant to VA research operations.
