About this file

The document is a Salient Characteristics template for a federal solicitation detailing technical requirements for a laser glass processing system. The U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Advanced Laser Source Development (ALSD) team is seeking one laser glass processing system with four key technical specifications: 1) Dual heat sources with integrated carbon dioxide laser and resistive fusion filament technology, 2) An advanced CO₂ laser configuration featuring a 40-watt annular beam for uniform heating, 3) A filament fusion furnace with secondary heat source and soft glass splicing capabilities, and 4) High-resolution imaging and alignment features for precision fiber positioning. The solicitation (W911QX-25-Q-A003) is intended to be awarded to Thorlabs, Inc. under FAR 13.106-1(b)(1)(i) for only one responsible source, with delivery required within 90 days after contract award to the Adelphi Laboratory Center in Maryland.

Technical Point of Contact (TPOC)

The Advanced Laser Source Development (ALSD) team at the United States (U.S.)

Army Research Laboratory (ARL) requires one (1) laser glass processing system with the following minimum salient characteristics:

1. Dual Heat Sources o Integrated carbon dioxide (CO₂) laser and resistive fusion filament technology in a single system.

2. Advanced CO₂ Laser Configuration o Annular (donut-shaped) CO₂ laser beam for uniform heating and minimized hot spots.

o Single CO₂ laser beam design for simplified power control and enhanced uniformity.

o 40 watts (W) CO₂ laser

3. Filament Fusion Furnace o Secondary heat source available within the same system for enhanced process flexibility.

o Various resistive filament materials and sizes available to optimize process conditions.

o Soft glass splicing and tapering capability using an iridium filament fusion source.

o Sub-micron tapering capability with filament fusion technology.

4. High-Resolution Imaging and Alignment Features o True Core high-resolution imaging for precision fiber alignment and inspection.

o Standard end-view imaging for enhanced process control.

o Rotational alignment capability for optimized fiber positioning and splicing accuracy.
